If done right it would make the PS3 cheaper to manufacture and it should only have a positive impact on sales. (even if its just partially offsetting a decline)
Anyway if SONY managed to put the CELL and RSX together with a single heatsink and use an external power supply it would greatly reduce the heat generated by the console allowing SONY to reduce the fan size or possibly even removing the fan.
Also the last re-design of the PS3 seems to be from mid-2011 when the CECH30XXB models were released and that was mostly updating the mainboard and fan to align with the changes made since the original slim redesign (CECH20XXA).
