Forums - General - Can 720p possibly be better than 1080p?

Its obviously possible, but to suggest his 720p set beats out ANY 1080p sets which is what he claims is a bit far fetched.

Of course possible. Look at cameras: pictures from a professional older 5 megapixel camera will of course be better than a 8GP cellphone with crappy lense.
But if you enlarge them sufficiently and both are quality cameras a higher resolution will be better.
The resolution is not the only feature after all. Onm the other hand 1080p displays really look awesome at the store.

ever heard of 6megapixel.org or something like that? go check it out. more megapixel in cameras are actually not always for the better

The importance of resolution depends entirely on the size of your TV, and your distance from the TV. The smaller the TV the higher the DPI, the further away you are the lower the resolution the eye can distinguish.

The way to find the importance you have to calculate the viewing angles of the tv from the distance you sit. Maybe I will post a new thread with some examples and such.

yes, thats why i thought you might be interested in the initiative. what they say is, that for a regular digital camera, the optimum is 6 megapixel. anything above will actually lead to lower picture quality....

Let me just compare the 720p/1080i TV that came with the apartment and the 1080p at home..... It's no contest, the 1080p at home is awesome.

well i completely agree with this article. There are plenty of factors that matter in how good a TV looks and people are waay to hung up on 1080p. you should note that the article specifies a 42" TV which at a normal viewing distance (~8 feet) the human eye can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080.

Did anyone actually read the article?

Apparently, Pioneer have figured out a way to to display "true black" on their plasma panels. They claim that their TV will be rendered invisible if it's displaying a black picture in an un-lit room. This effectively means that their new panels have a contrast ratio of... infinity! (well, at least based on how they're measured by industry today).

If the above is true, then I can understand his claim that their new 720p sets will blow away any TV on the market.

Pioneer elite tvs have always been 720p and sell for top dollar. I really think there is more to a picture than the resolution, like the article states.

Personally I think most people do not have the savvy eye of these analysts and really shouldn't care about all these figures. I spent way to long staring at 2 tvs one with a 5000 to 1 dynamic contrast ratio, and another with 500,000 to 1 dynamic ratio and I honestly couldn't tell the difference, in fact the contrast ratio seems to have a smaller impact then a simple touch like a gloss finish screen. I also think most consumers watching 720p tv think they are watching 1080p tv, and they're not. It's kind of like a wine connoisseur tasting something and expressing hints of nutmeg, hazlenut and a touch of butter cream with hint of wildberries in the aftertaste. These are things that will go unnoticed by most people.
