The importance of resolution depends entirely on the size of your TV, and your distance from the TV. The smaller the TV the higher the DPI, the further away you are the lower the resolution the eye can distinguish.
The way to find the importance you have to calculate the viewing angles of the tv from the distance you sit. Maybe I will post a new thread with some examples and such.
