Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Could Cost $600 At Release?

Wont pass the $350 mark, imo.

This.

I don't think Nintendo can afford to go beyond $350, I think they would do pretty well if they managed to get it at $300. Then that would place them well against the current 360/PS3 and also put pressure on the Nextbox/PS4 to price themselves right.

I remember buying my Wii bundle was £220ish and that was quite a few years ago. So I'm imagining it launched with a £250 price tag, which seems about right for the Wii U as well.

Didn't they list the PS Vita at like $999.99 or something ridiculous like that when it was first announced? This is just retailers being assholes... no way will the Wii U even come close to $600 in any territory.

It may in Austarlia and New Zealand.  PS3 as pointed out launched at $1000. It still is $350-$400 depending on model.

Ridicilous article. It will cost no more than $300.

Only if it's underpowered to the levels of X360/PS3

You need to think about the HDD and BR player that adds to the cost of the PS3 and if they are making a profit now with all of that in there then the WiiU can be more powerful than them even if it ends up on 300$ Nintendo might even take a loss on it. Whatever the cost of those things is it will be added to the power of the WiiU because it won’t feature DVD/BR or a hard disk as big as any of the HD consoles

Does anybody know how much Sony is making on each PS3 sold?

I think they already confirmed they are changing to BR like media but without movie playing abilities.

Also if they don't include any kind of storage to the console they would be capitulating in direct distribution wars from the start.

BTW isn't it funny how so many people don't read it's Australian price? ;)

Yes it will use 25gb discs as well as (rumoured or confirmed not sure) have 8gb of flash memory but as they did with 3DS they added a 2gb ds card in every unit and they can do the same with WiiU. Maybe a 32gb sd card which wont cost them much at all.

As for the PS3 price as you can see below

"by August 2009, Sony had reduced costs by a total of 70%, meaning it only costs Sony around $240 per unit."

source

And now 2011 will end and WiiU won’t be out until late next year and by that time the cost of PS3 will be closer to 100$ for Sony to make (note not sell). 360 will be even cheaper lol

So if Nintendo really does make it just as powerful as PS360 and sell it for 250$ (including the cost of U-pad of course which will probably cost them around 60-70$ they will still make a profit.

So lets say they add 100$ making it a total of 350$ and selling it with no profit and no loss they can make it a lot more powerful than the HD twins with the technology that is out there today.

Yeah I missed that one too

Which it pretty much will. Look at all the upcoming PS360 multiplatforms that are also planned for the Wii U like Aliens Colonial Marines. Yes, it might be able to do 1080p instead of 720p and thus perhaps have a twice as powerful GPU as the PS360 but by 2012 even that kind of GPU will be old and very cheap tech.

How I am thinking to myself: Okay, the hardware is relatively stronger than the original Wii which would mean say $300 instead of a $250 launch price for the machine itself and then you have to add $50 for the advanced Wii U controller which would give a $350 launch price for the Wii U if they wanted to make a little profit with every unit solds like with the Wii. But Nintendo learned from the 3DS launch fiasco and thus will allow themselves instead to lose a few Dollars on each Wii U unit sold to offer an attractive price - $300.

By that logic, the 360 was only twice as strong as the PS2 and Xbox, since it launched with a stupid number of multiplats (including King Kong and the like).

Yeah I felt like my logic was halting there. But according to rumours it is in that ballpark (2-3 times stronger than a X360).

What?! I highly doubt it since they stated that they already learned from the 3DS launch. I hope that those words turn into real actions.
