Forums - Politics - WWII Thread (How come the West never gives the Soviets the credit they deserve)

To echo what others have said I was made fully aware of the sacrifices made by the Russian people defending it against the Germanas and also the retribution then the shoe was on the other foot.

It is not unusual for us to focus on our efforts and loss as nations as we will feel that loss more. It also does not help that the Soviet Union effectively entered into the cold war directly after the war. It also does not help that Stalin persecuted his own people tremedously.

it doesnt matter, the USSR was still a "bad guy" during the war. even if they were supplied by the allies and we had an enemy that was the same. i will not ignore the crimes they commited. the USSR was as much a blight as the nazis, probably an even worse one because of how long they were allowed to exist for.

Pretty much. Your Swedish, right? I am sure that you'd have a bit of sensitivity towards the subject, as most Poles, Estonians, or any other nation that sits right beside Russia or a nation that engaged in a war with them.

There are a lot of interesting, alternative scenarios presented by WW2. But in the end, I think the real issue came down to who attacked who first. Germany gets the blame because they and the Japanese attacked mostly first. If it were the USSR and Japan doing it, we'd of learned the same grim outcomes that the Soviets provided.

In other news, I bought Hearts of Iron 3 because of these WW2 discussions. Fantastic tool for learning about WW2.

You have a special hatred towards the Soviets, did you not read all the posts i previisuly posted?  You are saying that the Soviets were just as bad as the Nazis where is your proof? i need real proof.  Nazis killed 28 million Soviet people, im sure you dont care about that.

I trust no one, not even myself.

im having trouble believing you are presenting a real opinion and that this is not just an attempt to troll people.  perhaps we could start with the holdomor genocide?  the invasions of finland and poland?  katyn massacre? the terrible mess they turned eastern europe into?  north korea? gulag? perhaps you want a list of some soviet war crimes?

if you are serious in your attempt to garner respect for the ussr, then i am quite frankly sickened.

Lets see:

Thats just about 3 minutes of research. Doesn't include the 700,000 murdered during Stalin's Great Purge, the 250,000 Germans killed under Soviet occupation immediately after WW2, or the millions killed by Stalin through other means. Soviet and Chinese communism killed more people than WW2 did on all sides. If you didn't know that, then you need to do even further research on the Soviet Union. Talk to a lot of people about history - some believe we should have continued the drive after Berlin straight through Moscow with Operation Unthinkable.

Well....(looks at North Korea, Split Germany, Cold War, and murders by the government). Maybe there is a reason why we don't talk about modern Russian history much.
That being said, we should be greatful all the people that brought down such a terrible regime as the Nazi's, as we should be greatful for everyone that contributed to the Soviet collapse.

Also, Hitler is seen as worse than Stalin despite Stalin being to blame for more deaths so why is that? We should focus more on this.

It appears in history, killing many people randomly is not that focused on upon compared to systematically killing a certain group and such.

It simply has to do with "Us vs. Them". They were the Nazis and Japanese, and it didn't matter who we teamed up with to beat them.

Likely the same reason no one dares mention the Khmer Rouge after the Vietnam war, and their atrocities. History focuses on the victors, not the real events of history, sometimes.
