Not many. At the time a lot of people thought it was a silly experimental stop gap until the GBA2 released. There were also 'next Virtual Boy' statements, but that's not exactly uncommon for Nintendo handhelds is it?

One of the best consoles ever, I've spent so much time on the DS. It was awesome for multiplayer as well. 8 player Mario Kart, Tetris and Bomberman are unforgettable experiences.
