Well, I may not be the best one to explain this, and I hope I don't offend any Swedes, but this is the way I understand things here in Sweden.T
hink of a time when the Swedes were poor. I mean really poor. Famine existed and each year about 1 percent of the Swedish population was migrating to the US. Chicago had more Swedes than the 2nd largest city in Sweden at the time! Then along came the socialists. They were able to improve things dramatically and did a very good job at it. Industrialized Sweden and brought it to the modern era. That, and the fact that Sweden did not enter any war since 1814 help the country to prosper. If you keep that in mind, now comes the part were I said the Swedish system would only work for the Swedish culture.
Given this mindset, the Swedes are very happy and satisfied with their way of life. They believe it to be superior. I find that the Swedes are not that ambitious, compared to other cultures, and they believe to enjoy life as it is. Compared to the US where people work all the time, here work is not equal to life. It is hardly an important part of it at all. This is nowhere like the american culture as I understand it. Therefore the Swedes are very resilient to change, and since they believe in their government, don't have a problem with say paying 50% taxes or higher. If for example you told you average American that his employer was paying 40,000 $ for him but he could only get 10,000 $ of those, well I guess he would go nuts. Not here in Sweden. People tend to accept that easily.
Therefore, this system could only work here, and nowhere else.
