Forums - General - You've found a substantial amount of money on the floor (based on a true story)

I don't know what a Tesco is, but I'd turn it in. That's a lot of money for someone to lose. Kinda sad he kept any part of it regardless of how small it was.

Finders fee, of which I would take 10%

In this day and age if you even saw half of that back you'd be ecstatic.

This does remind me though, my mum found a bag of about 30 PS2 games at the bus station the other day with a birthday card in there, and we're trying to get it back to the owner.

I find money scattered around sometimes at work (I work in a bar). There's generally no way to tell who dropped it so I either take it myself or share it as a tip with the bartenders.
If I found 1100£ on the floor of a store, hmm, I think I might take it, depening on whether anyone saw me.

That is a lot of money, I would feel guilty if I took it. The most I've found was $100 USD once at a restaurant.  I noticed who was there prior to seeing the money so I knew the relative age of the person.  When they left, and I was leaving, I noticed the $100 bill on the ground.  I picked it up and took it with me.  I then called the retaurant and told the person to take my number and give it to the person should someone come in looking for something they left at the restaurant.

They asked what it was, but I told them it did not matter and that someone most likely will be asking about it.  20 mins later I got a call from a girl who claimed to be missing something.  I asked her what it was and she described it exactly.  I set up a place to meet her and gave her $ back.  She didnt offer a reward or anything, but that was ok, just felt like the right thing to do.  100 bux to me wont make much difference, but $100 to a young girl is pretty substantial.

Cash is very easy to loose.  Say you found 1000, you skim off 20, the person you turn it into skimms off 200.  In my case, I didnt want to tell the restaurant folks it was cash cause they could very easily claim it.

I'd probably take it unless I wasn't broke at the time which usually isn't the case.

My friend walked into his local branch of Tesco yesterday and noticed that there was a large amount of paper littered about the floor - upon closer inspection, he noticed that they were all £20 notes! Shocked by his discovery, he collected them into a pile, took one note for himself, and handed the rest to the staff - who told him that he'd get to keep the money if nobody claimed it. There was £1080 in total (including the £20 that he took himself) - this money was not in a bag or an envelope; how did it get there?

What if this happened to you? Would you have handed in the money? What would you do with £1080?

I would report it to the store and leave my information, but take it with me. It happened to me before... long time ago, in the parking lot of a CompUSA. I told the customer service I found an amount of money, if someone came looking for it, they could call me (I didn't tell them how much was found, I didn't want someone random calling with fake details). A day later someone did, and they were able to explain it, exact amount, crisp 20's, folded up. Otherwise, how can you even tell the right person is getting it back?

I'm an honest man, but I was really hoping to not get a call...

that it was littered about the floor makes it a more difficult decision for me.

were it together, bound or in an envelope the answer would be a lot easier.

i actually found a few hundred dollars in a small envelope at a grocery store before. it was in the watermelon box, so someone had dropped it while getting one. the entire money got back to the owner, who was very thankful.

I'd turn it in... but not to Tesco. I'd turn it in to the police to make sure that the person I was giving it to wouldn't just pocket it. (Or at least lower the chances of it happening.)

While telling Customer Service that lost money was going to the police (with no amount mentioned.)

If it was a small amount of money I would hand it in to make me look like a hero. If it was a big amount, I'd take it all.

I'm pretty sure I'd just ignore it . . . maybe inform the staff so they can go pick it up, but only if I happen to meet any on my way out.

Well your friend basically screwed the guy over. If he goes in asking about a pile of money they are going to ask him how much is there. Since your friend took some the guy has no chance of getting that right...

Also, I'd turn it in. I'd feel really bad if I didn't
