Forums - Sony - A sensible opinion from IGN regarding Vita memory card prices.

the odd thing is that i never hear anyone talking about the bundle that comes with a free 4 gig card

I think the 4G bundle is great but they need to do something about the 16GB-32GB cards. Those prices are unreasonable.

I'm actually waiting for a Gravity Daze Bundle tbh. I don't think it's that bad, but Sony needs to rethink their strategies a bit more, especially with the unbootable game without a memory card.

Sony doomed, Nintendo doomed. Expensive memory worked for Sony with the PS2 and worked for MS with the 360, expensive memory has never been a problem for the success of a console as long as it have games it'll sell.

There are always going to be trade-offs.

You want a generational leap in horsepower? Fine, but it comes at a price.
You don't want to pay that much money? Then only expect a modest bump in graphics.

You can't have both without Sony's gaming sector going into the deep red.

This 100%.

Sony is shooting itself in the foot, considering that the lack of memory space in most Vitas will probably reduce the amount of digital sales.

I remembered paying $90 for a 4GB card in 2007/2008.

I would probably buy a small card for Vita. Thats the problem....I prefer to downlad games from PSN, but if I want to have a lot of games, 32GB is the minimum. Also, I can't delete and download a game as many times I want, because there will be a "limit" of 3 times, or no? This limit is in how many systems the can be activated or how many times can be downloaded??

A few of my friends are now waiting for a price cut :/ Seriously not a good way to start considering that the 3DS has had a year head start. In Japan it doesn't look good for the Vita especially since the 3DS has stolen the MH series. Sony should start acting soon, and I wouldn't be surprised if they did a Nintendo and have a price cut in a few months.

That's the limit for activations, you can download any number of times you want.

And the limit is 2.

hope the system doesn't fail, we need the competition between nintendo and sony to keep the prices reasonable. the memory price won't impact the sales... it's the games that will matter.

Well, it seems that Sony decided to follow a similar psychological strategy than Microsoft with the 360:
Small price tag on the basic console, huge price tag on proprietary accessories.

I personally prefer the path Sony went with the PS3, of being able to use cheap standard hardware (USB mice/keyboards/audio devices/printers/controllers, SATA harddiscs, bluetooth keyboard/mice/headsets and and and) instead of overpriced proprietary shit.
But from an economic point of view, I guess it's simply more profitable to trick the customers with a seemingly cheap basic console.

Furthermore, comparing the price of PS Vita Memory cards to the cheapest SD card available is a bit unfair anyway. Cheap SD cards use cheap and slow flash memory, while the PS Vita Memory cards will probably be high-speed devices.

And last but not least, it all depends on how much space will actually be required. My Xbox 360 Arcade for example uses proprietary memory cards as well. Even at the present day, the 64MB version costs 25 Euros at Amazon. That's even more money than the official price of the 4GB PS Vita card, but it has just 1/64th the memory. Or remember the Wii for example: It has only 512MB of storage, a good amount of that is for the system, and yet it is enough to not only store game saves, but lots of downloadable games.
And even the smallest PS Vita memory card has 8 times the space...

Poor VITA, everyone's hating on it so much all of a sudden

Retailers will bundle these things in with the VITA for a cheap price anyway. Well they will in the UK, not sure if USA gets as good bundles as we often do.

It's annoying but hardly anything new. I've spent £100's on buying new controllers, memory cards, multitaps, Wii Motion Plus, Balnce Board blah blah and the reality is most of them are priced pretty steep.

Don't think you can really own a Vita without one of these things though, some games literally need them to hold saves I believe. I think Sony really dropped the ball not at least offering a Vita model with built-in SD memory. like $300 for wifi + 16GB or something. Sure that'll happen further down the line though...
