Forums - Gaming - Who will reach 70m first? PS3 or Xbox 360

Which console will reach 70m first?

ps3 101 54.59%

xbox 360 73 39.46%

idk 11 5.95%

Total:185

I answered 360 because the PS3 isn't gaining ground fast enough to catch the 360 before it crosses 70 million.

PS3. They'll both be in the mid 60M range when the next gen consoles release. The PS3 will continue to sell well in smaller countries while the 360's main base (U.S.) will be moving on to the next new thing, ultimately eliminating the majority of 360 sales.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

Here's my prediction: PS3 will not overtake 360 before Xbox 720 comes to market. Why? Brand playstation is struggling for relevance in the USA these days with 360 being supremely dominant in these dying years of the currnt gen. With 360>PS3 by such a wide (and widening) margin in the USA there's nothing Sony can do in the rest of the world to substantially close that final 2.5-3 million gap before MS launches in to the next generation.

So, safe to say 360 should be hitting 70 million some time in 2012, and PS3 too, I say 360 will beat PS3 to that milestone relatively easily.

Strictly looking at recent vgchartz data, it looks like the 360 will push its lead by another 1mil by the end of the holidays if no big adjustments are made. The ps3 won't really have much of a chance to get to 70mil first assuming a nearly 4mil lead for the 360 by the end of 2011. I will repeat that this prediction is based on my assumption no big adjustments are made. If the 360 gets adjusted down or ps3 adjusted up it could certainly have a chance.

PS3 is at 55.8 M, not 56. 360 is at 58.4, not 58.

PS3 needs 14.2
360 needs 11.6

PS3 needs to outsell the 360 by more than 1.22:1
360 is currently outselling the PS3 by 1.16:1.

This requires an immediate increase in PS3:360 sales of 142%. Being as the next week of data is likely to be good for the 360, it will require an even bigger increase.

I'm sorry, I don't see it happening.

That's a very skewed way of looking at sales.  You are using the most recent sales numbers, while disregarding the sales numbers of this entire year.  Before the holidays hit, the PS3 has amassed a sales gap of ~1.5 million for this year.  Sure the 360 is probably going to knock off ~500K-700K before the end of the year, thanks to the holidays in America.  That still leaves a gap of ~900K-1M.  Having said that, I think they will either arrive at 70 million around the same time or with the 360 a few months ahead.  However, the PS3 will most likely reach 80 million first.

Yes, but the next month's worth of data will be extremely similar to this weeks data. This will be millions of sales for both consoles, and will give the 360 an even bigger lead. It won't be till January that the PS3 even has a chance to start cutting down the gap.

Well, technically, the last week of Dec should be a definite win for the PS3 with the big drop in holiday shopping in America.  Plus, the PS3 may have another week with the launch of FFXIII-2.  Of course, that one isn't a definite.

And while I agree that Nov and Dec will probably go to 360, it's not going to be that huge of a gain that the PS3 can't reverse it within a few months next year.

I'm not sure it actually matters, to tell the truth. This generation is already getting long in the tooth, Nintendo's at *90 million* units already, and next gen starts in a year, maybe less.

Not sure I'm reading this right do you think the PS3 will outsell the 360 by ~3M next year? To make it "around the same time".  Didn't the PS3 get a price cut this year?

Scottie was correct, and he's using the current numbers *as he should*, meaning that he's comparing apples to apples. The other guy just didn't understand him.

As it stands, it's anybody's race to second place, but 360 has a slight advantage still. In the end, though, Wii won. The race is actually over.
