Square Enix would like to shorten its development cycles on Final Fantasy games, according to Final Fantasy XIII-2 producer Yoshinori Kitase.

Speaking to Game Reactor (via CVG), the writer and former director said, “The current generation console, Final Fantasy XIII, was obviously the first game, and personally I think we took a little too long getting it out.

“When you think of Western triple A titles like Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Assassin’s Creed, they seem to work with a lot shorter turnaround – they make a new game in 1-2 years. That is something we need to follow up, because that seems to be the best way to keep our fans interested and attracted to the franchise.”

He also told the website that the Japanese publisher had “learnt a lesson” from the development of Final Fantasy XIII, stating that they took “a long time” to complete it.

The game was announced for PlayStation 3 at E3 2006—with an Xbox 360 version revealed at the same event two years later—and was released in 2010.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in North America on Janruary 31, and February 3 in Europe.

Nice news but this doesn't confirm if it will be a main series FF every two years. It could be FFXIII-2, XIII-3, XIII-4 all released every two years.

I'm sure a main series FF from the ground up will take much longer to make.

Hopefully that doesn't translate to more frequent.

btw I do like the way he sites those western games a xxamples, but theres a difference though FF is a new game everytime... those aren't

I wouldn't mind a FF every two years, so as long as they're high quality. I think they understood their lesson with FFXIII.

i'd love to see more RPG's from square just not FF every yr. o yea quality RPG's. have to mention that.

Well I would rather they actually did release some games, or at the very least announce when FF X HD is coming out, though it is slightly worrying that I am more excited about that then anything else that they are working on

I think Kitase means there will be a XIII-2, XIII-3, XIII-4, XIII-5 released every two years. That way it will be more like what they do with Assassin's Creed.
