Forums - Nintendo - Reggie promises casual assault next year!

The Regginator recently sat down with AOL to discuss the 3DS, it has been pointed out that Nintendo took 3DS in a hardcore direction ignoring the user base that made DS such a massive success in the first place. Well Reggie has stated Nintendo is going to right that wrong next year, 2011 may have been the year of the hardcore gamer but 2012 is going to be the year that we see more of the casual.

"My expectation is that, come E3, I think we'll be showcasing a range of different titles that, for a more casual consumer, they'll see reasons to jump on board with the Nintendo 3DS," When asked for further details Reggie gave the typical Nintendo response "I can't go into the details of what exactly those titles will be, but stay tuned. There is information that we'll be sharing prior to E3, plus a lot of information at E3 as well."

So what kind of software can we expect from Nintendo for the more casual target audience? "Will there be content to appeal to consumers 50 plus the way Brain Age did? Absolutely," Fils-Aime confirmed. "Will there be content that's going to appeal to women the way we are able to do with the DS? Absolutely."

Well all those who have been criticizing Nintendo for not bringing the casual software and the software targeting women and the elderly and such. You can stop holding your breath and breath a sigh of relief by this time next year you'll be doing all those great brain teasers and cooking simulators you loved but this time in beautiful 3D. If not cooking and Brain Age rest assured Nintendo's got your back.

Well actually with the Mario titles (MK7, SM3DLand) and the OoT release and StarFox64 alongside Paper Mario as well as the confirmation of a new Zelda and Smash Bros title. Add in Kid Icarus and such and the hardcore line-up isn't actually half bad. However as some users have pointed out including Rol and they have a point DS was largely a success due to their casual software like Brain Age. Nintendo can't afford to ignore a huge market demographic. Hopefully Nintendo won't choose either casual or hardcore and create games that satisfy everyone so maybe release a couple so called hardcore titles alongside a couple so called casual titles rather then releasing mainly casual or mainly hardcore titles in the future. Nintendo just needs to mix it up a bit.

Reggie is a marketing genius and if he is actually behind this move it is a smart one. The DS sold so well largely to titles like Brain Age and neglecting all those DS owners will not allow 3DS to sell nearly as well. Nintendo needs to make sure all of their former DS owners have software they want so that they feel compelled to upgrade. Nintendo is going after market share this generation at all costs they want to maintain their dominant share of the market both handheld and home. To do so they need to appeal to the casual market the 50+ year olds, the girls and women. They need to appeal to everyone they did with the DS or they will fail!

Nintendo won't choose between different gamers, but third parties probably will...as long as I can have variety of all games I'm satisfied, but I really don't want the situation of the Wii, where TP released very few compelling games.

holly fuck'n hell what a prick. this guy obviously has no idea what consumers want.

I think some of the posters on this thread forget that they are a very small (albeit vocal) minority of video game players.

Nintendo has been about growing the pie. So-called "casual" titles do that. So do "hard core" titles. A console -- particularly a handheld -- must have both. Nintendo must remember this and not go too far out-of-balance (see the last year for the Wii in North America for out-of-balance).

That being said, some people here seem to think only of their own desires rather than looking at the big picture.
