Forums - General - Is the death penalty a good idea?

Yes, and I seriously wish punishments were more severe and were more fitting to the crime committed:

e.g. Violent rapists should be castrated, thieves should be punished financially (take away some of his possessions and give them to charity or the victim), 1st degree/serial killers should be put to death, etc.

I don't want punishments to be cruel and unusual...but just make them reflect the crime committed. The only way to ensure a rapist will never rape again (besides keeping him in jail for life) would be to castrate him. How will he rape someone with not testicles and/or dick?

No, I do not believe so.

I believe the harshest punishment that should be able to be handed out is life in prison without parole. I do not think that the state has the right to take a life.

From what I have seen, the difference in giving someone a true life sentence and the death penalty is not particularly significant; and I'm not certain that the death penalty is particularly practical at this point in time. I'm not against it if a person has received a fair trail and been convicted by their peers, but when someone is going to be in prison for 20+ years and have millions of dollars of court-cases and appeals before they receive it I don't see it as being any different than life in prison.

i like much of that.

i dont usually want torture persay (spelling?, though there can be exceptions) but those punishments shouldnt/wont cause any physical trauma to the fellon.

I am all for it, a criminal will think a 100 times before committing his crime if he knew that death penalty is imminent if he kills someone else.

I am completely against the death penalty. Don't get me wrong I would rather have serial killers and such get killed, but the fact is innocient people have been executed before. And having just 1 innocient person murdered by his own government should be enough reason to completely abolish it.

There really is no reason to have it. It doesn't save money because it is often times very expensive to prove someone completely guilty and even with all the "fail safes" innocient people have still been executed. It doesn't help reduce overcrowding. Prisons are overcrowded because the government is busy arresting millions of drug addicts, not because its filled with millions of rapists and murders who would be the only candidates to be executed. It's not much of a deterent. Most murders are spur of the moment ordeals within families where the killer acts before he or she thinks of the concequences. It also sets precedence. If a government is legally allowed to kill their own people, then corrupt leaders can easily use that to their advantage in killing off political rivals over bogus convictions without rialing up their citizens as much. This happens in many third world countries and while it seems ridiculous to happen in "western countries" that still have the death penalty, a lot can change in 10, 20 years.

I do agree that prisons and jails are sometimes too nice. Ofc I don't want prisons to be like in Venazuela where a prisoner would be very lucky to survive the experience, but prisoners should not be allowed to have TVs, video games, or state of the art sporting facilities. They should only be allowed to exercise, eat, sleep, and communicate with their families.

Not being a spelling nazi but since you put "spelling?" its "per se" I think.

And yeah man, like I think there's such a thing as chemical castration (for my idea of doing it to rapists) so its not like physically cutting off the testicles or whatever.

And you're right, none of these will cause psychological trauma or anything.

no it's not, Not because some people don't deserve to die for their crimes, but because it is cheaper to just do life sentences, and also because mistakes are made. Someone brought up the Norway prisons and how nice they are, but people in Norway are far less likely to go to prison and if they do they are far less likely to return to prison than people in the US. On top of that, Norway has far less crime in general. The death penalty is nothing more than a feel good measure for people who want revenge, not a well thought out logical argument about which is better for the community.

Andre and your sig!!!!

I think it should be done away with. If someone has done something that would warrant him/her being put to death, I would be willing to pay for his jail time as a nation. Dying is the easy way out! Let these people sit in some hole for the rest of their life. Eating slop everyday, being afraid someone will shank them everyday or rape them. Forget Death, suffering is the way to go for some criminals.

Not really my sig, as you probably know, I lost that bet with Aldro :(

I agree, not all prisons are like that one in Norway, imagine being stuck in a prison at 30 years old, knowing you'll live the rest of your life in it. That's worse than death imo.
