23. Banjo-Kazooie (N64)

Some crazy types out there considered this to be the best 3D platform game of its time, ahead of Mario 64. I disagree, but that doesn't mean it's not a fantastic game. The game sees Banjo set out with Kazooie to try and save his sister Tooty from the witch Gruntilda, and they have help from Bottles and Mumbo Jumbo along the way. It made Banjo a star, as previously he'd just been a random character seemingly created only for Diddy Kong Racing, but he came in to his own with the help of Kazooie. It's yet another Rare game in my list, and there are still a couple more of them to come...

That's wrong.

Banjo-Kazooie was first demonstrated at E3 1997 and Diddy Kong Racing wasn't revealed until September or October of the same year. The same holds true for the then called Conker's Quest, so three of the ten characters big roster of DKR (Diddy, Banjo, Conker) had already or were poised to have their own games before DKR was a known project to the public.

Is that so? My apologies. I did not have the internet back then, nor did I really know what E3 was and all the information I had came from occasional magazine purchases. To my young clueless self, that's how things appeared chronologically, and as I'm writing all of these summaries based on memories, I've never seen anything to correct that assumption.

#23: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (Super NES/GameBoy Advance)
Release Date: October 4, 1995

I still remember the day I first encountered this game. I was at a birthday party in a "Chucky Cheese-eque" place called "Planet Kids", and in one of its many rooms there was this video game... It seemed so surreal, with it's magnificent art style... it was like a painting come to life, and better yet, you could play this painting. Only later did I learn that this game was called Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and that it was on the SNES (another game to add to my 'Man, the SNES has some cool games!' list). So I went around, playing the game at friends houses whenever I could. Fast forward 7 or so year later, and Nintendo finally rereleases it on the GameBoy Advance. I finally got to personally own the game that was always out of my grasp for so many years... and it was just as amazing to play through as it was to look at. Truly a masterpiece.

Favorite Boss: Raphel the Raven
Buying the 3DS early was worth it: Since I'm getting this game!

#23 - Fighting Force (PS1)

A game so good that it has left you speechless!

Edit: I've just checked on YouTube because the title seemed familiar and this game was on a PS1 demo disc. I've had a lot of fun with that one.

#24) Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (PS2)

I don't always like 3D platformers, but when I do, chances are they have a huge-ass arsenal of delectably destructive weaponry.

#23) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES/GBA/Wii)

A Link to the Past is great. The grass is also green and homosexuals are gay. I should be sorting out my fucked up sleep pattern right now, not doing this.

#22 Wipeout HD played on PS3, released 2008

A great game to get in a trance like state and rely purely on muscle memory to do perfect lap after perfect lap. I have to admit I never liked the weapon aspect of wipeout and as in all wipeout games I completed the wipeout HD campaign without firing a single weapon. Time trial, speed lap and the hypnotic zone mode is where it's at for me.

The best way to play this game is in first person with the view tilting sideways in the corners.  The crisp 1080p60 visuals look amazing while playing it on a 92" screen. Most games can't hide all the shortcuts they make blown up to that size, yet wipeout HD looks solid all the way through with great lighting as well.

It's not the perfect wipeout yet though. The tracks, although beautiful to behold, can't hide that they were originally conceived on the psp. And unfortunately the expansion focussed too much on combat for me. Also although the music is good, I still prefer the soundtrack of 2097.

Not that all that matters much. The game is comfortably sitting on the hhd to be booted up now and then for a few speed laps or some zone mode goodness. With almost instant race restarts it is the most enjoyable game for a few quick plays now and then.

Hopefully we'll see a wipeout game purely designed for console again featuring tracks with crazy jumps and incredible view distance. Or port 2097's tracks over to HD for an expansion.

23. Diablo II - Lord of Destruction (PC)

Probably the best PC game ever made.

22. Kingdom Hearts (PS2)

I loved it, although I hated some of the disney characters.

22. Beyond Good & Evil HD (PS3)

I've played a fair few Ubisoft games, some have been horrible wastes of potential, and some have just been plain horrible. But here we have what may well be the only example of them getting it right, and even then they almost messed it up with the final boss and the randomly reversed controls. I can forgive that though, because the game up to that point was brilliant. I'd initially been looking forward to playing it on the Gamecube, but I didn't buy it for some reason which I can't remember, and then a little while later I stopped gaming for a couple of years until the Wii launched. So it was that I didn't finally play it until it was released on PSN earlier this year, and I'm glad I finally got to play it.

Would I just ruin the balance if I came in now (starting at #50)?

If you feel up to it... why not!
