Forums - General - Rioting in State College, PA. Occupy? No: it's Football

Specifically the firing of longtime Penn State coach Joe Paterno over the fact that he was made aware of child sexual abuse conducted by his underling (Defense Coordinator assistant coach) Jerry Sandusky back in 2002, supposedly reported the information higher up but never called the actual police over it, and now that the whole thing is unraveling the Penn State board of trustees moved to fire him.

The riots are in support of Joe Paterno, and this makes me lose quite a bit more faith in humanity than any of the Occupy shenanigans.

Apparently all sorts of alumni are rallying in support of him. :/

It's just a game, folks!

This is why I don't like sports.

i dont think this has anything to do with the actual game.

I meant "it's just a sport," i know it has nothing to do with any one game in particular

but this isnt about football... it may be his job but this isnt about the sport.  its about people and their connection to this person... they like and respect this individual...

I agree, this has nothing to do with football, but these people are pathetic. In their sick minds they just want to attach themselves to the situation.

How can they support the guy? He saw a grown man molesting a young boy in the shower and didn't make sure something was done about it.

He didn't witness anything. He was told by someone else that Sandusky was seen doing some sexual acts with a 10-year old boy in the showers. Paterno told the Athletic Director about it and I'm guessing the AD went to the police, because there wasn't enough to convict Sandusky back when it happened. Either way, the PA State Commissioner said that Paterno fulfilled his legal obligations, although he questioned his moral obligations.

Anyways, I wondered why Sandusky was able to still access the facilities at Penn State and retain emeritus status, even after retiring in 1999. The president of the school should have revoked those privileges after the incident in 2002.

Maybe he took them from the street?

I only know the one incident involved a 10 year old boy. I'm just wondering why the hell there was a 10 year old on campus, even if he was just visiting the school, without his parents around?

Sandusky founded a charity called Second Mile that dealt with "at-risk" kids, so I imagine he had access to a whole lot of victims. The indictment details eight victims, with ages ranging from 7 or 8 years old up to 15.

The one that directly deals with this OP is a 10yr old boy that Joe Paterno actually saw was told Sandusky was having sex with by McQueary. That is why Peterno deserves to be fired and arrested IMO.

Paterno didn't see it. Mike McQueary did.

ooops guess I read that wrong somewhere... I knew someone saw and told their boss. I guess the 'boss' was Paterno.

Still rest of my point stands... Paterno and McQueary deserve legal penalties for not reporting it to police.
