On top of all this the PS3 hasn't really lost any games

Don't know, we may have lost BioShock, this and a (framerate solid version) of Mass Effect I may have been interested in for the PS3.

For the long run I think the 360 will become a minor factor and if so, I think this would good for the PS3 as devs may decide to much better tap the PS3's distinguishing factors. (Likewise most mulitplatform Amiga games only started to tap into important hardware benefits when the Atari ST was being overshadowed)

Tough to lose something you never had. Basically most unreal engine games where delayed or not in development for the PS3 as the engine was not optimized for it. Also I think many 360 games where really just PC games that where made for the 360 since it must have been easy to port to or develop along side etc. An example of this is left for dead which I am sure was really just a PC game but why not bring it to the 360 if it is fairly easy to do for more money potential. By losing games I meant 3rd party games that where announced for the PS3 though some had delays most are still coming out though I am sure there may be a few cancelations here and there though that also goes for the 360.

We know BioShock was planned for the PS3 and if RockStar is to believed GTA IV could have become an even better game if they weren't stuck to supporting DVD (a major limiting factor for them designing the game).

With regard to the state of the Unreal engine on the PS3 you are right, this even resulted into 3rd party lawsuits against Epic. But everything should be OK now as UT3 runs very well already.

Maybe, and by the same token, every Xbox360 fan should be thanking Sony.

That is correct. Figured it woul be implied.

Xbox 360 games will benefit from games being designed on the PS3 first, like developers pointed out this will result in more efficient cache friendly code.

Ummm, I doubt there would have ever been a frame-solid version of Mass Effect on the PS3, unless they wanted to spend an extra 6-12 months working on it compared to the 360 one.

They use Unreal engine middleware, IMO the state of Unreal Tournament 3 shows this should now easily be realized.

Actually Sony should thank whoever made the final decision that resulted in the RROD problem. Without it the 360 would likely be over 20 million and the PS3 would be trailing badly on a monthly basis in Europe as well as North America.

According to analysts 90% of current 360 owners upgraded from the original XBox. The pool of upgrading XBox users will dry up eventually.

I have read about many people buying additional 360s after their unit broke or experienced other problems, hoping a new Elite or HDMI premium XBox 360 would solve the problems they were experiencing.

Yer and I suppose you also READ about the PS2(which is still for sale) DVD drive of death ?...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps2
Scroll down half way to Controversies

E.g -
Owners of early PS2 models purchased from launch until spring 2003 often reported faulty optical drives in their consoles. The earliest drives suffered from a constantly misaligning laser lens, which could also result in discs being scratched by the lens. Later defects were the result of a shift in voltage to the laser. The first problem was easily remedied by opening the console's casing and tweaking a cog that controlled the lens's distance from the disc; however, this action voided the console's warranty. The second problem could be fixed by using an oscillator. After many consoles had broken down, a class action lawsuit was filed against Sony. Sony agreed to provide free repair or replacement for the faulty consoles and continued to do so until February 2005.[citation needed]

Another problem that could cause a disc read error is wear on the coupling in the head assembly to the worm gear that moves the laser. A symptom of this is a loud repetitive clicking sound. Nevertheless, this problem rarely occurs on newer consoles.[citation needed]

I had 3 of the PS2s replaced 1 wouldn't read discs the other two sounded like two cogs with brocken teeth grinding together every time the tray was opened..
Didn't stop the PS2 becoming the worlds best seller though did it?..

Propaganda on the internet is easy -
E.G
I know someone who has had 4 PS3s all due to the dust problem they are known to have.
I have READ about people getting the latest 40 gig PS3 and are having heating issues.
Is this true or bull ? you will never know that's the power of internet propaganda

The Elite is a superb machine it runs cool and quite instead of READING try going and asking people in the REAL WORLD......

MikeB is at it again. Lost a Mass Effect? The PS3 can't lose what it never had. Mass Effect has been in development for the 360 from the beginning. Using your logic I guess the PS2 lost KOTOR and Jade Empire too right? The only reason PS3 owners have the slightest possibility of ever seen Mass Effect on PS3 is because EA bought Bioware.

It was due to drive vibrations, screws would get loose (also sometimes the lens would get dirty over time), problems you can easily fix yourself. A minor issue compared to RRoD.

I still remember when my c64 data recorder didn't load games anymore, I paid far too much to get this repaired. After the repair I learned I could easily fix the problem myself within 5 seconds by tightening one screw...

I know nobody personally who has experienced any severe problems with the PS3 so far, some of my friends run the PS3 folding/gaming 24/7. The PS3 is a very sturdy device, there are no major dust related problems. For some a white cased PS3 may be a better option in the future as dust shows more quickly on black surfaced electronic devices.

Learn to read, I just stated the PS3 may have lost BioShock (known to have been planned for the PS3 originally), this and a framerate solid version of Mass Effect I would be interested in for the PS3. Both are Unreal engine based games and could be easily ported over to the PS3.
