well considering they didn't survey all PS2, Wii, PS3, PSP, and all DS system owners in Japan then this is a failed survey.

Either way, I think that both will do fine as they can in the Japanese market considering the state it's in right now. I like Nintendo (I will re-iterate my hate toward NoA, though) and Sony both, but sometimes the members on VGChartz make it difficult. Usually, it seems that Nintendo fans here have more of a problem with me liking Sony than the other way around. |
I think the survey is just a reflection of people who got burned with their 3DS purchases for the poor showing for both the vita and WiiU. They are more gun shy about purchasing another gadget at Y24999 and not knowing what the future will hold, like a lack of games for months or a price drop 6 months out. I think with the interest level releatively high, if the vita can snag a high profile title or sony come up with one in house, alot of those who are interested but not buying would change to interested and buying.
And yes, you can easily tell those who are mocking. I usually just dismiss their comments becuase they are nothing but dribble. When your childish personality shows through on the internet, thats really sad. I cant imagine having a decent adult conservation with these people. I kinda feel sorry for them in a way.

Yeah, places like Operation Rainfall have more mature gamers that actually like to discuss games. Even though it's full of Nintendo fans, I can talk about games I like on Sony platforms and most people don't mind. TBH, I never had a problem supporting Sony and Nintendo both until I came to this board. There are many people that actually like to talk about games here, but there are those that have to get really childish with "xxx company copied xxx company" or "xxx company PR spokesman said this about my favorite company and I'm offended." Everyone has their biases to a certain company, but it would be nice if more can put games above their bias toward the corporations that make the devices that go under the TV.

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. Paranoia is rampant on this forum too. I've seen it everywhere "This user said this or that so he/she hates this or that company". Good job guys. Go back to GAF I'm sure you'll find much more mature comments there. ALSO: If you have an issue with something said, why not quote it in a post and retort, rather than having us all guessing. Poor Mr. Khan who provided a very sensical assessment is now thinking you were talking about him. This is the crap I hate here. |
It's true. I wasn't really talking about Mr. Kahn. I disagree with his assessment, but I wasn't labeling him as one of the immature posters.

...why is this bad for WiiU? We have seen next to NOTHING about it, we still don't know its cost, its design, games, power, online, support, launch date etc., and yet the people who will buy it is NEARLY the same as the Vita, of which we know pretty much everything about, is launching in 6 weeks and is the sequel to a massive portable in Japan?
I know which position I'd rather be in
But, this is one poll on a very small number of people. Don't panic guys! The Vita will do just fine. It looks great, so it should sell great. Heck, if the PSP did, after it died almost everywhere else, I don't see why there's any issues, aside from lack of games.

Well, PSP died in Japan as well until the slim came around along with Monster Hunter. We won't know much about the Vita until it launches. The 3DS struggled until they finally lowered it to a resonable price and actually announced some more games. Right now, Vita does need a few more hit titles. But, it's too early to say the Vita will never have any at all. I'm hoping they are securing a MH title. But we never know if another thing may come along like Monster Hunter. Each generation brings a franchise or two as another major franchise.
I don't think either console is doomed, but that seems to be a difficult position to hold around here. It seems it's always a choice between Sony or Nintendo - very black and white. This generation, we saw 4 of the 5 consoles in Japan have reasonable success (sorry, MS). Sony and Nintendo switched places in the pecking order mid way through the generation. If anything, this generation broke the rules that only one console can be significant. Not just Japan, but worldwide. I think that fact has made fanboys from all consoles uncomfortable and trying to philosophically figure out who the winners and losers are this generation.

While everyone is wasting time parsing the numbers the biggest unaddressed complaint still stands. This is not a large enough sample size especially given the unqualified methodology. How a poll is performed directly impacts the end result of a poll. Unless a poll is rigorous it is prone to wildly inaccurate results. Opinions can vary wildly depending upon geography, and reaction to external unrelated events.
The time frame for this poll is too narrow, and the generality of those that are being polled doesn't bode will for the poll workers taking time to vary their respondents. Yes you can get a valid result from a poll of as few as a hundred, but this is important the smaller the number the more rigorous the poll maker must be in ensuring that regional and chronological variables have been thwarted.
For examples sake lets say I want to find out who people think will win a election. If I want to use a sample size of just a hundred I cannot go to just one location over a couple days and ask a hundred people at that location. That location may not be representative. Further more the incumbent may do better or worse depending on what is in the news on the given days I ask my question. The same holds true for their challenger. What I would want to do is call a hundred people at random in wildly different places at different times over a couple weeks. That will help me avoid local biases, and gut reactions from tarnishing my results.
There is a reason that statistical studies are considered to be junk science. Anyone can do them, but it takes skill to know how to do them properly so you do not get inaccurate results. There are groups that do a wonderful job with small sample sizes, but they are very careful with how they go about doing their polls. What is worst of all is the fact that polling makes for excellent slow news day filler. It is painfully cheap to print up a thousand surveys, and hand them out on a street corner in front of a news outlet. It is a brilliant way to assembly line dozens of news stories.
Only 5% or so of the people in the study bought the Wii, yet almost 10% said they will buy the WiiU. From this it is easy to see that the WiiU is almost twice as popular as the Wii. Expect lifetime sales of 180 - 220 million.
Conversely, the Vita will be bought by just one in three psp owners. Life time sales to max out at 40 million.
