Forums - Gaming - Study: Wii U, Vita Don't Interest Japanese Gamers

The survey was conducted between October 17th and 19th of this year, and the audience surveyed was about 53% male. 16.3% were in their teens, 18.2% in their twenties, 21.9% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, and 27.3% were fifty or older. While this audience covers a wide range of ages, 64% of them owned a games machine. The most popular ones were the Nintendo DS family, with 62% of the 694 game owners owning one, while 53% had a PlayStation 2, 5.7% had Nintendo Wii, 34.3% had a PSP, and 27.8% had a PS3.

Taking into consideration that hardly anyone of the people surveyed own a Wii, but a good portion own a PSP, the results are much worse for the Vita than the Wii U.

Thanks for this detailed quote on the sample they've used that is missing in the OP. From their survey WiiU's launch buyers are broader than previous Wii users... which just seems wrong, the appeal of the new console can't be broader than their current audience.

What I gather from that poll is the 3DS is doomed.

lol my first thought as well... why was there no mention of 3DS at all? Not owned or wanted.

Most of them will buy buy regardless. Japanese are consistent on buying their home grown products.

This survey is pretty worthless. It also doesn't take the collective nature of Japanese consumers of needing to jump in with everyone else.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Lol, what does that have to with the Wii?  You feeling guilty or something?

Besides, only 6% had a Wii, remember?  And if I have to except that Vita will be a failure, then you must except that the Wii U will be an even bigger failure.  Of course, I don't think any will be a failure.  I think the Wii U will be successful, but nowhere near Wii successful.  I also think the Wii U has a VERY good shot at being passed by either the PS4 or the NeXbox, or maybe both.  The Vita I see getting a better market share than the PSP did this gen, somwhere closer to 50%.

I have already accepted (yes, accepted) that the Wii U will be a failure. Now hold your word and say it with me: The Vita will be a failure.

But who said I was a man of my word?  Certainly not I.

Nationalist fervor does not extend to patently unnecessary consumer goods. They might buy these products in lieu of foreign made goods should they choose to buy them, but that's no guarantee whatsoever that they'll want to buy one in the first place. Consumer apathy has already rotted the home console industry in Japan

I think it bodes worse for Vita than it does for Wii U. Wii U is little more than a concept at this point, albeit a concept that we know will exist in the foreseeable future. Vita has a price point, games, and an imminent release

Nailed it.

Though I can completely understand Japan's disinterest with Vita.

And why would Japan be not interested in Vita ?

Lack of compelling software?

It has more Japan oriented soft for launch than 3DS in it's initial months.

Generally niche software or remakes as far as the Japan-oriented stuff, however.
