Forums - Gaming - Study: Wii U, Vita Don't Interest Japanese Gamers

I wouldn't look to deeply to the survey really. But let's be honest really, while the 3DS has 3 killer IP's releasing in the near future or just released (SM3D, MH3G/MH4, MK7), the PSV has nothing yet. Just like the 3DS initially it will probably have a good launch but will have to wait for some time to get going without big games. It all depends on what is announced. You can't really pinpoint how it will perform because just like the PSP before, it may end up doing well against all expectations.

Well, this thread is about gamers. Preorder numbers for the Vita put the attach ratio below 0.6, so the survey isn't as far off as you think.

Well, considering there are probably WAY more than 1,083 that pre-ordered the Vita, I could ask those same people if they would buy the Vita and I would get a result of 100% yes.  Kinda negates this study, doesn't it?

Not really, because you would have a heavily biased sample.

True, but without detailed numbers, we don't know how reliable this survey is.  As you stated above, only 64% of those surveyed actually owned a system.  The other 36% should not have been counted.  True the original source was about consumers as a whole and IGN (again) twisted it to be about gamers soley to make it look worse, it still should have solely been directed at gamers.  I mean if we were going to do one for the population as a whole, then the Vita and Wii U will do just fine, as Japanese consumers have shown little interest in the Wii (~9.5%) and DS (~26%).  The Wii has only sold to ~9.5% of the population, so according to this the Wii U will do about the same and the Vita will push ~13 mil units.  Of course, people's views will change when the consoles are launched and after advertising and price cuts.

As for the actual gamer portion of the survey, we would need the exact number of people in those seperate age groups, their gaming company of choice, and how many hours a week they put into gaming.  Just because you own a console doesn't mean you are exactly a gamer, which is why the hours of play are needed.  Gaming of choice is obvious, as some may be biased towards one console or the other.  Though, I suppose it would probably be only a small portion of the sample, so that part probably isn't the most important.  However, what is important is the age group details.  I say this because many may be older and while they may own a console, it was mainly for their children, so they don't really play it.  Without these details, this survey is very flawed.

You can't poll hikikomori.

You guys should know that by now.

Since it says gamers with at least one gaming platform it gives us over 3 milions (if we counted only DS owners) as potential buyers in short term - then there's another 30% + who are interested but not buying yet.

And uninterested people tend to become interested once you release soft they care about.
If you asked me if i would buy PSP when it was released I'd say lol no- now I have it and something like 20 games for it ;)

Good point.  It states they are interested, but aren't buying.  This doesn't mean they won't buy it ever, it means they aren't pickin it up at launch, but things like games, new custom models, or a price cut may sway them.

If you do the math on it, that's ~ 44.6-45.8 million potential buyers who are interested in the Vita and Wii U, but don't have plans to be it initially.  As long as Nintendo and Sony continue to support their systems with games and features, and maybe with the first price cut, I would imagine quite a few of those potential buyers would become actual buyers.

Of the gamer portion, 35 % own a PSP, 6 % a Wii.

Again, the console preference really isn't the strongest point, as many aren't so diehard they wouldn't try the other company's product.  Besides, over 62% owned a DS.  The more important points would be actual age group numbers and their hours a week of gaming.  Like I said, just because you own a console, doesn't make you a gamer.

You just can't accept that Vita will be a failure, eh?

Also, nice cheap shot at the Wii at the end of your post.

Lol, what does that have to with the Wii?  You feeling guilty or something?

Besides, only 6% had a Wii, remember?  And if I have to except that Vita will be a failure, then you must except that the Wii U will be an even bigger failure.  Of course, I don't think any will be a failure.  I think the Wii U will be successful, but nowhere near Wii successful.  I also think the Wii U has a VERY good shot at being passed by either the PS4 or the NeXbox, or maybe both.  The Vita I see getting a better market share than the PSP did this gen, somwhere closer to 50%.

Yeah because 1,000 consumers is an accurate estimation /facepalm

Whats up with 250+ [over 25%] of them being over 50 years old, I can't think of any 50+ year old that would be interested in ANY video game console/handheld.

I don't think Sony figured it out yet. They need to 1) launch a console with many system-sellers (MH, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and Uncharted) , then 2) bring the steady software lineup we're seeing them launch with. They have it upside down.

Until they figure that out, Nintendo will always be on top.

Not only that, I do not believe Unharted will be a system seller on the PSV, the same way God of war, LBP and GT failed to do so on the PSP. Maybe I'll be proven wrong of course, and if Uncharted turns out to be as good as the PS3 version then hopefully i am. I just don't think they've grasped the concept of handheld gaming yet.
