True, but without detailed numbers, we don't know how reliable this survey is.  As you stated above, only 64% of those surveyed actually owned a system.  The other 36% should not have been counted.  True the original source was about consumers as a whole and IGN (again) twisted it to be about gamers soley to make it look worse, it still should have solely been directed at gamers.  I mean if we were going to do one for the population as a whole, then the Vita and Wii U will do just fine, as Japanese consumers have shown little interest in the Wii (~9.5%) and DS (~26%).  The Wii has only sold to ~9.5% of the population, so according to this the Wii U will do about the same and the Vita will push ~13 mil units.  Of course, people's views will change when the consoles are launched and after advertising and price cuts.

As for the actual gamer portion of the survey, we would need the exact number of people in those seperate age groups, their gaming company of choice, and how many hours a week they put into gaming.  Just because you own a console doesn't mean you are exactly a gamer, which is why the hours of play are needed.  Gaming of choice is obvious, as some may be biased towards one console or the other.  Though, I suppose it would probably be only a small portion of the sample, so that part probably isn't the most important.  However, what is important is the age group details.  I say this because many may be older and while they may own a console, it was mainly for their children, so they don't really play it.  Without these details, this survey is very flawed.

Of the gamer portion, 35 % own a PSP, 6 % a Wii.

Again, the console preference really isn't the strongest point, as many aren't so diehard they wouldn't try the other company's product.  Besides, over 62% owned a DS.  The more important points would be actual age group numbers and their hours a week of gaming.  Like I said, just because you own a console, doesn't make you a gamer.
