Forums - Gaming Discussion - Battlefield 3 Loses $2,000,000 in Launch Day Sales to Pirates

Im so tired of hearing the excuse they wouldnt have bought it anyway. It is still stealing, its just the same as walking in a store and grabbing something and walking out. Its not ok. I know they may make a crap ton of money off this game and these are only a drop in the bucket but what about next time when people do this and it actually hurts the studio making the game. Its just stupid.

EVERY GAMERS WORST NIGHTMARE...THE TANGLING CABLES MONSTER!

to be honest, DICE could do something about this.

why not sell Mutliplayer only game version? Entice those pirates with the single player, and then try to sell the multiplayer version.

It's not unheard of, how many games let you play the barebone version, and then try to get you to fork out for more?

You can't play the multiplayer anyway if you pirate the game. So, I guess you're not against this?

Against what? piracy? there has always been piracy out there, the key is to get some kind of money out of them. Selling a multiplayer only game would fill that void.

Frankly, I doubt people who pirated this game will be willing to fork over full price just to play multiplayer anyway. Even if they just sell it for 20 bucks each, that's 20 bucks x (whatever people) more than what they would've gotten otherwise

Sorry to blow your little candle off but no, by most reasonable standards it is not the same thing. Copyright infringement is not theft, period, no matter how much lobbyists in the USA try to make it not so. Cast aside for a little bit your irrational fear of suddenly being without your yearly Call of Duty because of piracy, which is not going to happen, and try to judge things more objectively and reasonably.

If I seem a bit too rude, forgive me, but I study law in college and self-righteous paladins with dodgy logics like these simply piss me off like hell. It's the same kind of people that would put someone in jail for pedo for dating someone who's 17 years and 364 days simply because it's in the Code, and well, thinking reasonably spends too much brain power, so why bother.

But you said they should give them the single player ( or at least a big part of it) and make them buy the multiplayer. You could argue that's precisely what some of those pirates did; tried the campaign and were blown away => bought the game for the multiplayer.

well, considering the single player is lustbuster and only 5 hours long, I ENCOURAGE DICE to do that.

however, if it were say.... Uncharted 3, then I say no. However, hackers are hackers, they will hack whatever they can to avoid paying a dime. In order to squeeze some money out of them, my proposal is really the only way. (sell multiplayer only game at lower cost)

Wow...just wow... what a disappointment in gamers.

Not really. The human race is pathetic. This type of behavior is to be expected.

EA did not lose any 2mil to pirates. Pirated videos games are downloaded because they are free, therefor the people downloading them didn't want to pay for them and would not have purchased the games anyway. Is it wrong? Yes. Does each downloaded copy of BF3 subtract $60 from EA's profits? No.

Oh the rationale that some of you people make regarding lost profits is so hilarious.

I expect the pirating number to reach 15 million in number, maybe 20 million. Black Ops reached 15-20 million, I dont know about Modern Warfare 2 but I would assume that would be very high millions as well.

So I assume in total pirates will consume around 750 million in sales. Since roughly there is around 10-20% turnaround of people who would buy the game if they couldn't pirate, I would say EA will lose around 100 million in sales because of Pirates. And really those numbers would be torrents, considering that disk based pirated solutions are still around in many developing nations, the number could be much higher especially in china.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong
