Forums - Microsoft - HDMI 1.4 stereo 3D arrives on Xbox 360, Arkham City is first full-res Xbox 360 3D release

Eurogamer

A while back, Eurogamer ran a report revealing that full-resolution stereoscopic 3D using the HDMI 1.4 standard was coming to the Xbox 360. Five months on, Batman: Arkham City is the first shipping game to utilise it.

Previously there has been some confusion as to whether the Xbox 360 hardware is physically capable of carrying the HDMI 1.4 stereoscopic 3D signal. There was some concern that the older HDMI 1.2 standard supported by the Xbox 360 couldn't be extended in the same way that the HDMI 1.3 controller in the PlayStation 3 was repurposed to support the new standard.

However, the release of Batman: Arkham City confirms that from a hardware perspective, any Xbox 360 with an HDMI port can offer the same level of support as the PlayStation 3. Our analysis of the game confirms that the two consoles are both outputting the same 1280x1470 60Hz signal.

Gonna look great on my Sony OLED 3D Headset!

On most days this would be good news, but today it really isn't. This form of 3D on consoles is actually worse than what Xbox has been doing thus far...and here is why.

1. Neither console can do 1280x1470 as they can barely do 1280x720. So there is some serious upscalling going on here. Upscalling looks like shit. Old side-by-side 3D method xbox used would just interlace the 720p image and map the pixels 1:1 to your tv, inserting black lines in each second column. I'd take that over upscalling any day.

2. Xbox 3D games are now locked to HDMI 1.4 and displays only. Before, any display or method supporting side by side would work.

2 steps forward, 10 steps back...

I don't wanna watch George Clooney's chin in 3D!!

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

I rather have uncompressed audio support through hdmi, how hard is it to turn the dolby digital encoder off...

1280x1470 can be better then side by side on a passive 3D screen since those half the vertical resolution and you end up with 640x540 per eye.
It depends on how the 360 scales to 1280x1470, if it simply scales the 2 640x720 images to 1280x1470 you're still screwed.

Essentially thats exactly how both PS3 and 360 do 3D for most games with this HDMI 1.4 standard.

Before 360 would do 2 X 1280x360 and TV would insert black lines in every second line, making it interlaced 1280x720. This at least maps the visible pixels 1:1 to the pixels on the TV and doesn't strech or blur anything.

If they were more powerful this would be a good upgrade but with the circumstances it is no good.

Sounds good until someone said how bad this has turned out to be. Can't wait until next gen when 3D will hopefully be fully utilized.

I'm pretty sure it was one of disolitude's posts concerning 3D some time ago, and the brief exchange I had with him afterwards, that curbed my enthusiasm about 3D.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.
