Forums - General - Toshiba announces 6.1 inch LCD panel with an insane resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels

source

When Apple introduced the iPhone 4 roughly 16 months ago, they couldn’t shut up about the 3.5 inch “retina display”. After having used that display for over a year, this writer has become the biggest pixel density fanboi lucky enough to have a soap box to stand on that’s read by millions of people every month. Once you break the 300 pixel per inch barrier, there’s no going back, which is why we were floored when Samsung and Google announced the Galaxy Nexus last week in Hong Kong. That device packs a 4.65 inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Now smartphones are one thing, but what about tablets? Samsung announced a 10.1 inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels a little over 5 months ago, though they failed to say when it’ll actually show up in devices that we could buy from our local electronics store. It’s widely expected that the third generation iPad, which we’re assuming will be announced and be made available in the spring, similar to how the first and second generation iPad were announced and then shipped several weeks later, will have a “retina display”. Does the innovation stop there however?

Toshiba just announced an LCD panel that does 2560 x 1600 pixels, and it’s an incredibly tiny 6.1 inches. Compared to the 329.65 pixels per inch an iPhone 4 does, the 315.83 pixels per inch the Galaxy Nexus does, and the 298.9 pixels per inch that Samsung panel that’s yet to ship does, Toshiba’s display is capable of absolutely mind bending 494.9 pixels per inch. Check out the image above to see just how sharp that actually is.

Now for the bad news, we have no idea when this thing will hit the market, and worse yet we don’t think anyone will even use it. Apple has made 10 inches the standard for tablets and 3.5 inches the standard for smartphones. The iPhone 5 will likely have a larger screen, and there are rumors of a 7.85 inch iPad mini, but 6.1 inches? The only company building devices with screens of that size are Amazon, and they’re using 6 inch electronic ink displays to prevent eye strain. We severely doubt they’ll switch to LCD.

With the current battery tech, I guess this display'll last 15 mins on a full charge?

The resolution of that new 6 inch Toshiba sounds impressive at 2560 x 1600 pixels ~ 4.1 million pixels in total. IPad 3 will launch next year and is expected to have resolutions on par with this Toshiba. The display on smart phones between 3 to 5 inches takes a lot of effort reading on those tiny display screens. A magnifying glass comes in handy for reading emails, notes and books on a smart phone.

6 inches would make a good ereader, PDA, MP3 player and mini web browser that fits in your pocket. 6 or 7 inch tablets/ereaders  are not in the same market segment as the IPad 1/2 and other 10 inch Tablets. The size of the display screen makes a huge difference in providing comfort to consumers.

Thats absolutely mindblowing and somewhat unnecessary. But cool...

sauce?

Well, that's... useless...

Dark_Lord_2008; no, the iPad 3 is not expected to have 2560 x 1600 pixels. It does not need it nor does Apple chase after the highest resolutions in their product (even going so far as to state that competitors who have higher res are wasting money and effort).

That's sweet! If you're superman that is...
