Forums - Microsoft - When to expect Blu-Ray external drive for XBOX 360

I think people here are looking at the situation like its 2 enemies not willing to work with each other. Yall do know that Blu Ray movies are encoded with a MICROSOFT video encoding, right?

So funny thing people dont realize, Microsoft even makes money off of Blu Ray as well, off the licensing fee for using a Microsoft developed movie codec.

Everyone assumes automatically that Microsoft and Sony are arch enemies, but they are honestly not really competitors. The only thing they compete in really is the gaming industry. Thats it. Microsoft is primarily a software company, Sony primarily an consumer electronics company. Do you see Microsoft TVs out there? do you see Sony operating systems or Sony making their own "Microsoft Word"?

Not to mention, these businesses, the gaming divisions of these 2 companies, is small potatoes compared to the rest of the company. Wasnt like microsofts game division last quarter like 300 million, compared to 4.3 billion of the entire company?

Very few are encoded via MS' VC-1.  Most studios use AVC/Mpeg-4 for their Blu-Ray encodes.  The only Blu-Ray backing studio that used VC-1 was Warner, because they recieved subsidies for backing HD DVD and using VC-1, and simply ported their HD DVD encodes over to Blu-Ray.

Microsoft is, and has always been, far more interested in pushing downloadable movies.

The HD-DVD drive was added to the 360 as a measure to muck up the format war and try and prevent Bluray from taking off. It was only done to slow the growth of an HD disc and thus make things easier for a download service to take off.

And I'm sure the profits from the add-on didn't hurt either.

Never, sony and microsoft will never partner.

Sony sells windows computers...

It dosn't mean they partnered for it. They sell computers with the most popular operating system.

It doesnt mean they partnered for it. they sell player add-ons with the most popular hi-def format.

also if memory serves, microsoft actually stated that they would release a Blu-ray add-on if it wins.

I really don't see what's in it for MS. If blu-ray ever gets big it's going to be in another couple years, by which point stand alone blu-ray players will be so cheap there won't be any incentive for people to buy an extra blu-ray player or even a blu-ray equiped 360.

What will be interesting is the formal MS chooses for the Xbox 3, while blu-ray might be standardized by that point a defunct HDDVD might give MS similar storage capacity with a difficult to pirate system.

I just want to point out that Microsoft used CDs and now uses DVDs to put software out.  Both are supported by Sony.

That said, I don't expect a blu-ray add-on from M$.

Business is business. Whatever the companies what to do that brings them closer to achieving their goal, they will do it. Let me give you an example, the Cell, (which is used in the PS3) was co-developed by 3 companies. Sony, IBM, and Toshiba. Now Sony and Toshiba are in a so-called "war" for the next high-definition optical media. There is no such things as a business to totally take out another business just because of what "side" they are on. If a company thinks that the next move will help them out in the long-run, they will do it. They will overcome any problems.

It's free $ for them. Of course, they will release a Blu Ray addon if Blu Ray wins. They already mentioned that it's an option.

Yup because Sony doesn't want to make royalty fees from microsoft or anything. Think logically in buisness you can't hold grudges if there's money to be made by both parties it's a good thing. I'd say probability- 85% Possibly not until production costs on blu ray drives come down a bit more though.

Actually, you got tht mixed up.  First off, the VC-1 is the Mpeg 4 derivative codec.  AVC(or more known as the H.264) is based off the MPEG 2.  that codec was used primarily at first by blu ray, but the picture quality isnt as great as the VC-1, which mainly HD DVD used.  This is why early Blu Ray/ HD DVD comparisons usually had HD DVD winning out in picture quality because of the use of the VC-1 codec.  Now they encode in VC-1 cuz they realized their mistakes by trying to use the mpeg 2/H.264 format and the complaints of the picture quality in comparisons.

I don't see why this is a never situation. Microsoft more then any other company will do what it takes to survive. If they feel blu-ray is part of their survival they will sell a blu-ray drive. Microsoft has done bigger flip flops then this... And to tell you the truth they are not that invested into HD DVD to begin with. They have never promised a game for it, and promote their Marketplace services more then HD DVD movie buying.
