i hate to say this but none of this matters, what matters is the pornography industry, the decided the format in the past and they will decide it for this war until online downloadable services become available for the hd dvd movies and such

Eps, supporting both formats was hurting their bottom line. The HiDef war was supressing support from both consumers and retailers. Having to tailor the same titles to 3 differnet formats increases production costs. It encourage WB to flush money down a blind alley by developing a hybrid disc (compatable with BR and HDDVD), which it had to abandon because no other studio was willing to support it (I think Paramount had signed on, but pulled out when they contacted to be HD exclusive). If there was really a net profit in supporting both format, WB would not have been the only studio still in this position. |
Yes, I can see supporting both formats would be hurting their bottom line. But as long as they and Paramount hold out as HD-DVD, they are hurting the BR studios bottom line by making the market smaller and split. Thus movies that might ordinarily get bot by a consumer would not if they went down the HD-DVD path. So, I can see a game of 'chicken' developing. Who will / did blink first? Who really needs to be sure that BR succeeds?
Did Warner go hat in hand to the BR folks, saying "We see the error of our ways. You're right, and we deserve to paid whatever you want to charge us for BR royalities"?
Or is it more likely that the BR folks, while pretty sure they could win, didn't want the format war to drag on for who knows how long. And to get it wrapped up this year, customers under 1 format, less confusion over which one to upgrade to, that the BR folks told Warner, "You know, we really like you. And for our friends, we have a special royality rate."
Basically as dschumm and a few others have said, no cash payoff like the Paramount deal included. Just a better deal for Warner than otherwise would have happened.
Torturing the numbers. Hear them scream.

Wow so after not being able to win an arguement you start issuing subtle threats We don't need to waste any more words here in this thread. The ever improving ps3 sales will speak louder than words. And Sony wining the format war will only push the console more. I suspect this is the reason why you are so vexed.

It's not a matter of winning an argument, its a matter of the other person not conceding the facts thus making such an argument pointless. If I had lost, why did DjMeister not counter? I took the mature stand and ended it maturely, yet you would try and pounce on that and turn it into a victory for Sony of course. I also don't see how I made any threats as I'm not a mod to make good on them. Again you demonstrate fanboy exaggeration to the extreme. You're just supporting a fellow a Sony fanboy and that is more than clear in your follow up.
What you are doing is called cheerleading. BTW, I chose to avoid the debate because certain Mods were keeping a close eye on it and I didn't see it turning into anything but a flame war.

yes what you are doing is considered trolling, though you are bordering between being a troll and being plain guillible. there is no proof that BDA actually paid off warner and your stating it as if it were fact. warner joining blu-ray is a very logical step. Warner said that they wanted to choose only one format and that they would let the consumer decide. |
Trolling you say? I never said the rumor was true, just that I made a comment on the assumption of its likelihood. I'm aware of the other factors that may have played a part and don't discount them, but don't make me apart of your back n' forth pissing contest when all I did was interject to comment on the likelihood. If what I did was trolling then God help the rest of this forum.
What happened was I made a comment that got under the skin of a couple short tempered fanboys and they called troll on me, and given the history of the accusers on this forum their motives and credibility should be more than obvious to anyone not wearing blinders while riding the said bandwagon.
Toshiba should take revenge by immediately stopping the production of Cell processors
Why are folks arguing over whether money changed hands or not? Do you think it will change anything?
This makes it like 99% certain BR will be only supported HD format for movies, TV shows, etc. by major studios.
People are posting as if the fact a bribe was involved makes the impact invalid.
It doesn't. Warners was always the one that could swing the decision due to their position as largest provider of (shall i say current gen?) content. They have gone BR. New Line have gone BR. HBO probably will too I guess.
None of these guys (including Universal and Paramount) want multiple formats - with around 70% going BR that's pretty much it.
Nothing illegal has happened here and 'bribes' would simply take place as auditable business transactions - i.e. promotional funding, contract incentives, etc.
If you wanted HD DVD to win you're probably int the position of those who had Betamax players and movies (I did!) and I suggest you start dealing with it.
Nothing will change this but another business transactions but really I can't see any miracle HD DVD could pull out of the hat to counter this.
If you wanted BR to win, well, looks like you're gonna get your wish.
DVD will remain dominant for a while but expect to see the virtues of getting an HD TV and going BR pushed much more aggresively once the dust settles.
In a number of years expect the studios to cease DVD so you have to have BR to buy new movies (or download digitally). Most likely they'll keep BR players able to play DVDs to soften the transition.
That's all folks!
For consoles, the question is what this means for PS3 (hard to see it as anything as a positive) and the 360 (minor negative I believe)
BTW - would the porn fans quit with the HD DVD will still win because of porn arguement?
The porn industry will go BR if the studios do - because the porn industry follows the studios. Sure, when there were two formats it picked the cheaper - but if the studios ditch HD then porn will either stay neutral or much more likley go BR (and by the way a quick search of internet tells me the porn industry is signing the praises of BR porn sales).
The porn industry is aligned to and follows mainstream studios - it does not and will not try and lead a format war decision.
Besides, you think folks are going to keep buying HD players if that means you're going to buy only porn for it? Think again. Porn is digital downloads and whatever the studios back.

QFT!!!
Also, Toshiba payed Paramount a crap load of money to get them exclusive, so what just happened is no diferent.

Actually business doesn't work this way.
HD TV's may be selling but a lot of people are buying them because they look good and are the only choice rather than because of everyone welcoming HD TV's into their homes with open arms. The sales of the Wii back this up - the only console on the market thats not High Def and it's currently the market leader.
If you look at the fact that the PS3 is the cheapest blu-ray player on the market and then tyou were to work out the percentage of PS3's sold compared to the total amount of HD TV's sold - i'm pretty dure you'd find the attach ratio for blu-ray isn't that great yet.
You can now buy DVD players at my local shop for £15.99 - there's a long way to go in price decreases before the majority of people rush to buy a blu-ray player as their first choice.
Those people that think they're perfect give a bad reputation to us who are...
"With the DS, it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen, but I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that." - Phil Harrison, Sony

I didn't counter because the argument is fruitless. You didn't/and still don't believe you're trolling, so I figured I'd not waste my time. Also, you did threaten me with a ban, which is extremly wrong. :(
