This makes it like 99% certain BR will be only supported HD format for movies, TV shows, etc. by major studios. People are posting as if the fact a bribe was involved makes the impact invalid. It doesn't. Warners was always the one that could swing the decision due to their position as largest provider of (shall i say current gen?) content. They have gone BR. New Line have gone BR. HBO probably will too I guess. None of these guys (including Universal and Paramount) want multiple formats - with around 70% going BR that's pretty much it. Nothing illegal has happened here and 'bribes' would simply take place as auditable business transactions - i.e. promotional funding, contract incentives, etc. If you wanted HD DVD to win you're probably int the position of those who had Betamax players and movies (I did!) and I suggest you start dealing with it. Nothing will change this but another business transactions but really I can't see any miracle HD DVD could pull out of the hat to counter this. If you wanted BR to win, well, looks like you're gonna get your wish. DVD will remain dominant for a while but expect to see the virtues of getting an HD TV and going BR pushed much more aggresively once the dust settles. In a number of years expect the studios to cease DVD so you have to have BR to buy new movies (or download digitally). Most likely they'll keep BR players able to play DVDs to soften the transition. That's all folks! For consoles, the question is what this means for PS3 (hard to see it as anything as a positive) and the 360 (minor negative I believe) |
QFT!!!
Also, Toshiba payed Paramount a crap load of money to get them exclusive, so what just happened is no diferent.
