So today I came across a story that is buzzing all over twitter. I only follow game industry people from developers to media. Many tweets posted called the New Men In Black title just announced by Activision the "First multiplatform Next-Gen" game. I tracked down the most reasonable articles from trusted sites and posted the news. Then comes the shit storm users on here believe that Activision is referring to current generation consoles. Activision themselves didn't state which consoles the game is coming for specifically saying only "Next gen consoles".
If a game is coming for 360/PS3 these days its usually confirmed as coming to 360/PS3. But it is true that up until recently companies have called their games "next-gen" the question is why?
I mean with WiiU announced and Nex-Box, PS4 around the corner who the hell calls out dated hardware from 5-years ago "next-gen". Obviously the article has confused myself and others within the gaming community. Why would a publisher say "Next-gen consoles" rather then actually coming out and saying which platforms the title is coming too?
Its pretty stupid that anyone would refer to 360 or PS3 as next generation systems. They are old out dated consoles and a new generation has already been announced. In 2005 we weren't calling PS2 and GameCube next generation, in 1995 we weren't calling Super Nintendo next generation.
Why are people calling PS3/360 next generation? Are then just completely ignorant of the fact that the next generation of consoles start rolling out next year? Do they think we are still in 2005? Who in there right mind calls 5 year old consoles next-generation? To my knowledge this was never said at the end of past generations.
I still wonder alongside many on Twitter in the gaming community. Is Men In Black a next-gen console title or a current gen console title? Activision didn't actually clarify which consoles it is coming too.
So is it just ignorance, stupidity or an act to confuse or piss off gamers? Should any developer call a current generation game "next-gen"?
