Forums - Sony - Everybody Dance vs Just Dance 3 (PS3)

I respect your outlook, but in this case i see it as the glass half empty. Im not saying my outlook is the end all be all. I just see it as people accepting the absoulute bare minimum, if thats what people want, thats damn ok with me. Im not saying dont make games, those games fund the games I actually want to play. Everyone wins.

The PS3 is not the place people expect fun party games, just like people arent expecting the Wii to have wall to wall shooters. Sony can advertise Everybody Dance till the cows come home, who in there right mind is going to spend 400 on a PS3 and MOve to play a game that they can either a) play something similar on the WIi they have or b) get a Wii that is half the price?? This kind of software has not been backed on this console, you really believe Sony will turn it around this late in the game?? Id be shocked if they sell half a mil lifetime

They don't have to spend that much money.  The PS3 is 249 and only going down in price(I wouldn't be surprised to see more 100 gift cards for all consoles this season).  Move bundles are 79.99.  The price of both will only go down over time.

The PS2 wasn't known as a party game console and that didn't stop games like Singstar and Buzz as well as other eyetoy games from appearing and doing rather well for themselves(EyeToy mostly doing well in the Euro though pretty meh in America plus many SingStar games never even made it outside of Europe) towards the end of the generation(The first release of Singstar was in 2004 only).

Depending on thier focus next gen(The only things we have heard publicly stated imply it may be pretty casual and maybe female focused) it wouldn't be a bad idea to start targeting that demographic now.  I know the Wii is the console upon which this material is expected(I alluded to in my original post so you can't say I don't know that or why that is as I explain both which I can only assume you still haven't read) but Sony will never get there by not releasing these types of games and supporting them.  It's especially helpful that just about no one is supporting the Wii anymore including Nintendo. Next year when Wii U is out and no one is supporting the Wii they can compete quite well and have a small base of enthusiasts from which to grow.

Singstar still manages to do well on PS3 when they release the games in more than one region or dare to even let people know about them(I'm a fan of the series and don't know about many of the PS3 editions that I'm seeing in the sales totals). That is a party game period and still manages to do well despite the far less casual userbase.  The  model that they are using which allows you to buy songs from the SingStore also means that even with low sales they are still probably rather profitable. Hell SingStar Dance may hit a half million this holiday it's not too far off as is.  This is in no way a bad thing for Sony to pursue.

Just to be on topic JD 3 will wipe the floor with Everybody Dance. The tracklist is more than enough evidence as well as support and advertising for the series.  If they use the online store model as they have been doing with SingStar I still think it will be a good and profitable venture for Sony even if it doesn't really compete with a larger, better supported and well known franchise.

THe problem with your statement is that the PS2 had NO competition at all in that department. Was there Singstar like games for GC and Xbox?? People who wanted that had no choice but to deal with Sony. Present day, you are ignoring the 500 pound gorilla called Wii. 250+80=330 thats more than twice the price of a Wii, now lets be real here. If your interested in this type of game and just this type of game, what are you gonna buy?? Just because no one is going to support the Wii, does not mean it will stop selling. There is very little Sony can do now, they will keep making dance games for WIi, I garauntee that.  THe Wii is flooded with these types of games. PS3 will never catch up in that dept. Now what Sony does next gen, is up in the air.

As for JD3, i would not be surprised if the game is just outright cancelled for PS3, it was supposed to be released tommorrow along with the rest but Amazon has it released Dec 31, thats not even a real date. No need for it to be delayed on PS3 unless they were playing on cancelling

Kareoke Revolution appeared on the Xbox and Gamecube the games were about equally recieved by critics.  Same price or generally cheaper consoles with with better graphics.  There was competition. It wasn't successful but there was. PS2 did not exist in a vacuum.

I'm not ignoring the Wii. It has been mentioned plenty of times in all of my posts on the subject. If they want some dance games, trivia games, karaoke games as well the occasional FPS or the occasional strange J game they may.  Party games haven't done so horrible on PS3 that we can say there is NO market for them. I think markets have momentum and can get larger if catered to appropriately or decline when not.  Its about exciting customes.  So far the Wii has done it better but I think that this a very healthy opportunity that Sony needs practice with in catering the casual market.

Lack of software on the shelves for it will. That's where retailers make money. That's why they sell the consoles.  Wii Sports and Wii Fit are easily arguably the best reasons to own the console.  They are often bundled with it.  Retailers need more games to sell.  Beyond Ubisoft I don't see any support and they are moving to Wii-U and 3DS retailers will move on swiftly unless those consoles completely fail. Nintendo consoles don't tend to sell in emerging markets firsthand forever giving them smaller tails than Playstation systems.

Even more room for ED I suppose. Though at Game Stop it has a tuesday date of 12/6 with a preorder bonus of some sort. Maybe move support issues delayed?

Just dance was probably delayed because Sony asked them to delay it to make it a "newer" game closer to the holidays (at least on their system), and also so it didn't compete with Everybody Dance.

As for Everybody Dance, it will probably do okay, especialy if it has a Move bundle with it this holiday. On a personal note, I already have the game. My wife won some party thing for it that came with Move cups (they change color when they get cold ) and party favors. Anyway, it's not too bad. I do wish it had more than 40 songs, though, but I suppose more will come as DLC. My wife likes it. It also has a 20 person party mode. Haven't actually tried it yet, so I don't know how that works. I guess it just track the massive blob behind you.

Forgot about KR, but I would argue that the genre was not really popular in those days, not like it is now. otherwise we would have seen alot of games like that.

Im not saying that there is no market for these games on PS3, im saying that it is really small and the other two have that market on lock. This market is being catered to very well on the Wii and thats where those customers went. Sure Sony doesnt loose nothing in trying and they should try, but they are not taken those customers away from Wii at least no time soon.

If we're talking straight dance games, Wii only needs Just Dance, the other dance games do not sell anywhere near enough as JUst Dance maybe Zumba which incidentlly is having a sequel for Wii which is exclusive. We're just gonna have to agree to this agree, i dont see ED or JD3 selling that much on PS3, especially going by the Zumba and MJ #s, at least these games are cheap to make.

They could have delayed JD3 so as not to compete with ED, but even that seems silly to me as there is a sequel to JD Kids being released on PS3 in a few weeks

I would argue ales tell a different story about the popularity of Karaoke games as only in Europe SingStar the first edition managed to outsell all karaoke games since. Even the release of SingStar vol 1 which at about one million sales is a major decline for the series especially considering it's international sales data we have for the latter(Though the sales  are still  far superior to just about anything I can find in the genre that doesn't include SingStar in the title.)

I doubt they are taking customers away from the Wii either. However if console sales this generation have taught me anything it's that no market is on lock. SingStar, Buzz and EyeToy games all did pretty well coming out well after the console identity was solidified. Kinect being expensive and late to the game still did quite well for the holiday season in NA.  Why is another success so unbelievable?

SingStar Dance which from anyones experience critic or personal I've heard hasn't been very positive and yet it still managed to move .35 million copies almost exclusively in one region.  I am sure that with actual advertising and quality that number could rise .15 million more.  Wether ED represents a rise in quality or advertising I do not know and we shall see but seeing what a sub standard entry can do I don't have any doubts that it is possible but I suppose we will have to agree to disagree.

Just having the one game doesn't do as well as having a variety. Consumers love choice. Zumba is a fitness game primarily and it's sales seem standard for PS3 fitness games.  No one has really supported any type of fitness game on the console and such sales are expected. I'm sure most don't even know PS3 has fitness games.  MJ was released well past the holiday season(best time for these types of games) with little to no fanfare or advertising.  It was pushed during the holidays on the Wii and advertised well.  This disparity in advertising and getting late releases doesn't help any of the 'casual' multiplats on PS360.  This also seems to be a trend. Released late to little to no advertising and low sales.  I cant believe that is mere coincidence.

I dunno about the delay. I can only speculate.

ok, yeah the advertisments need work and actually making these games need work too. But i would argue, since these games are NOT being made, shouldnt they then be flying off the shelves, since they are not that many to begin with. If i like fighting games and i have only console A which does not get much of those games, would i not get the first good or at least decent one to come along? But then again im informed and most people are not.

I dont think SingStar Dance is nothing to be proud of IMHO, not if we look at the sales history of the series. Thats why i dont have much faith in ED, i have yet to see one ad for it and its essentially a new IP, how well do you think it could do?? But i was wrong about Heavy Rain so I could be wrong about this.

It really depends on what you measure as success. Eyetoy was released on a console that had like 70 percent market share? that is alot of course it would do ok and of course KR sold the best, just about every multiplat back then sold better on PS2 regardless of genre. PS3 is not the market leader and it is not offering something new. The Move is a souped up wiimote, thats not a negative I have one and i love it, but it is what it is. Kinect is succesful becasue it is different from the competition, its offering something that the other two are not. Cant say that for Move, which is why i believe ED and JD3 will not do that well

If the only option is crap then all you attract are a few flies.

I agree with you on SingStar Dance. It is nothing to be proud of. Im just saying if thats how many flies there are it's not difficult to imagine sales being better than that for a legitimately quality game.

EyeToy had only 3 or 4 games released in America greatly limiting it's success.  It was quite popular in the EU region though.  It sold approximately equal to or greater than Kinect in the EU region and I have been hearing nothing but talk of Kinect's success. We all know Sony doesn't advertise like M$ does either. Account for population growth(almost a decade worth so at least a few million) and I see them being equally successful in that region.  It also helps that M$ has demos everywhere.  I can't go to Electronics store and not see someone trying Kinect.  Sony rarely has this for their peripherals.  I read an interview with a Gamestop manager and just about everything they say Sony needed to do with Eyetoy to make it more successful M$ did  with Kinect and have hardly eclipsed the sales of a not well pushed initiative in that region. You tell me relatively which is the larger success?

Even on PS2 KR sales paled in comparison to almost all versions of SingStar.  KR sales was never my point. Only that there was competition in that genre on cheaper consoles with better graphics than the PS2 didn't exist in a vacuum even if it did have the majority share.

I could agree with this, except the crap part.  The dance games released on PS3 now are the same games released on the other two. So if its good enough for those audiences there. Why not the PS3 audience??? could it be smaller user base, or simply alot of PS3 owners have one of the other two and just buy it for that?? im going with both

Late ports don't do well on most platforms period.  That's not exclusive to PS3 and some of those games have done not much better on the 360.  Not a knock against it's userbase. Just an observation about late and unadvertised ports.
