Forums - Sports - The NFL Thread 2011: New York Giants Win Super Bowl XLVI

Everyone might find this as an excuse, but I honestly think things would have been much different if the Packers Offense Co Son wasn't found dead at the bottom of the river. That really messed up the teams spirit. If folks didn't notice our Offense was so uncharacteristic. There was just no heart in the game.

Look at history of similar instances where a teammate or someone really close to the team dies in some tragic way, it just messes a team up bad. Just like when the Colts were rolling at 13-1, but when Tony Dungy's son committed suicide the team just when down hill the rest of the season.

I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to jynx them, but I knew when that news hit nothing good was going to come out of it.

Cool I thought the comment meant you missed mossed games. And I know most of the streams suck. I actually only use EU sites because the feds lock up American streaming sites very quickly to protect copyright laws. That is cool you do not have to watch commercials, but I can tell you that that is the reason many non-football fans watch the game here. Olsd ladys will be talking about the quality of the commercials in the streets.

I think AFC is a easy call, but NFC is going to be close.... however, with home field, Niners should be on their way to a Superbowl.

The Patriots are coming in with the Ravens in their crosshairs after they embarassed them last year in the playoffs and allowed Baltimore to gain 250+ rushing yards. If Ed Reed isn't hobbling around the Raven's should have this, Ray Lewis is a good enough coverage LB to close the middle a little bit from those passes to the TE duo of Gronk and Hernandez (who by the way has some of the best TD celebrations this year). My only concern is that Joe Flacco is terrible and as long as he tries to pass more than handoff to Ray Rice the Ravens will not put up enough points to win. The goal is to stop the Pats from scoring 30+ pts.

Eli Manning is clutch I dont know what else to say but the guy lives for this time of year. Alex Smith is still pretty young but the Giants D line will get to him and pressure him into bad throws. NYG won't be able to gain yds on the ground against the stingy defense of the 49ers but Eli should have another good game passing.

Either way it will be good football all around!

I still would give the edge to the Giants.
I wouldn't be surprised if the 49ers performance suffers a little from their victory over the Saints, whereas this Giants team is more experienced and is right now at the top of its game and has 2 of the hottest wide receivers in the league... ( like someone else said the 49ers won't let the Giants run but the Giants ran badly for 75% of the season and each time Eli, Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks bailed them out...)

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Both games should be pretty good. AFC, I think New England will come out the winner at the end.

NFC, I give this to the Giants. They will do a better job at protecting the ball than the Saints did, and they will also cover Davis better than the Saints. The defensive front line for the Giants is more capable at applying pressure to the QB than the Saints; thus less of a need to blitz and better coverage.

(Warning ahead is an in depth break down of Ravens and Patriots)

I don't think this Ravens team matches up well with the Patriots. That game against the Texans showed how seriously inept their offense is. Houston played much better than the Ravens, the problem was Yates just could not step up to the plate.

Ray Rice is single handedly the Baltimore offense. He is the number one rusher and number one receiver for the Ravens. If you want to see the Ravens entire offensive plan look at the first 3 plays of the game on offense against the Texans.

The first play of the game was a lead play with Rice that got stopped. The second play of the game they used a go route to Torri Smith, that gets stopped. The third play of the game they ran a F-Post play, that is when you motion a back out then run a post play on the inside and try to attack the middle of the defense. They were stopped on all three plays and had a 3 and out.

That's it, thats the entire Ravens offense right there. You shut down those 3 plays and the result is exactly what you saw last weekend, a stagnant offense.

On the flip side here was the Patriots first offensive series.

Patriots line up with Branch and Welker to the left and Gronk and Edelman to the right with Hernandez in the back field (4 wide receiver set). Brady completes to Gronk for a 16 yard completion.

The Patriots then go no huddle and line up with Branch wide left, Gronk tight left and welker and Edelman out right with Hernandez in the back field( 3 wide and a TE).  The Broncos are stuck with their Nickel defense on the field. They show a 4-3 look with the Nickel Back over Welker. This causes them to lean heavily towards the Welker/Edelman side of the field which leaves a wide lane for Hernandez. With Gronk blocking Hernandez runs for 45 plus yards.

The Patriots again go no huddle with Branch and Hernandez lined up left with Gronk, Welker and Edelman to the right (5 WR set). With a Nickel defense still on the field (due to the no huddle) the Broncos become mismatched against a 5 wide receiver set and this results in a touchdown for Welker. (As a side note the Broncos should have taken a time out at this point to get the right personnel on the field)

The Ravens cannot protect the middle of the field and have no one to match up with the Patriots tight ends. Their defense is not set up to handle a spread offense. Also keep in mind that the Ravens have only played a top ten offense once this season when they played the chargers (a spread offense) and they gave up 34 points and a loss.

For these reasons I believe the Patriots will be the victors of Sunday night's game against the Ravens.
