Forums - Nintendo - Will the Wii be the DS (third party support-wise)?

Probably another year or two, just like the DS, Normally, I'd say shorter, because developers already have seen how successful the DS turned out, and the popularity of the Wii is through the roof, but to make decent games I think would take longer on the Wii than on the DS.

Seppukuties is like LBP Lite, on crack. Play it already!

Currently wrapped up in: Half Life, Portal, and User Created Source Mods
Games I want: (Wii)Mario Kart, Okami, Bully, Conduit,  No More Heroes 2 (GC) Eternal Darkness, Killer7, (PS2) Ico, God of War1&2, Legacy of Kain: SR2&Defiance

My Prediction: Wii will be achieve 48% market share by the end of 2008, and will achieve 50% by the end of june of 09. Prediction Failed.

yes i think wii will get ds status and alot of thirdparty games i suggest even more third party games on wii than ps3\X360 even alot of exclusives!

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!

bet with *no one yet* that the combined first week of Monster Hunter 3 in america and europe will be 600k or more! winner changes looser sig and avatar for two months!

nope, 3rd party will just dump cash-in's into the wii but the quality stuff will be else where, just take a look at kanomis latest announcement about their awesome games, what's not to love about them right.

Well, the Wii had better TP support than the DS right from launch, but not by much. I don't think your prediction is too far off--TP support is already getting much better. No More Heroes, MOH, Monster Hunter (though Capcom has always been good to Wii), Fatal Frame, Alone in the Dark, and really the devs are just starting to take advantage of Wii's power.

Wii third party support already is better then the DS.

Unfortunately, DS third party support actually isn't that good.

Top 3 favorite games: Super Mario Galaxy, The Sims 2 (PC), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Believe it or not, the DS had the same problem as the Wii for 1-2 years. The problem is: shovelware. Yes, the DS was once called a "shovelware handheld" before. That was before devs became smart and supported it because it has potential and a good fanbase and userbase.

Look where the DS is now. It has companies like SE (they think it's god), Level 5, Capcom, Namco, Konami, etc. on its side. The good news is that the DS and Wii aren't that much different. They aim for the same demographic. The Wii is basically the console version of the DS. They both didn't go for graphics, but for gameplay.

Even the Sony fans/fanboys even like it. Before it was "DS sucks, PSP FTW!" (PSP was getting all the support back then) and now it's "Look at the DS go! Look how many milestones it's breaking!"

The DS expanded rapidly, and games started coming on. Will that happen to the Wii because the Wii is having the SAME EXACT situation?

I don't care what anyone says, they are the same and will have the same success! Give the Wii 1-2 years time like the DS instead of rushing it like you all do. Even the 360 took 1.5 years+ to get good third party support going.

It's not the exact same situation; it's much worse in Wii's case.

I came in here to say just this. Here's the breakdown of DS games rated 80.0% or above on Gamerankings, by publisher:

Nintendo: 22 (Counting all of the versions of Nintendogs as one)

Konami: 4

Square-Enix: 2

Capcom: 2

Sega: 1

Activision: 1

D3: 1

THQ: 1

Atlus: 1

Now, compare that to the PSP...

SCEA: 11 (Counting MLB and MLB '06 as one)

Konami: 4

Sega: 4

Rockstar: 3

Capcom: 3

Activision: 3

EA: 3

Namco-Bandai: 2

Square-Enix: 2

Ubisoft: 1

Nippon Ichi: 1

Buena Vista: 1

Koei: 1

THQ: 1

D3: 1

Now, you tell me which one looks like it has the better third-party support. And people wonder why I'll be trading in my DS on a PSP Slim soon...

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

I think Japanese developers will jump on sooner as Wii is obviously dominating Japan. Also they've seen the success of the DS moreso than anywhere else. Problem is they really struggle against Nintendo in Japan, even Capcom hasn't done too great in Japan. Yes, M&S is doing well but it's published by Nintendo in Japan. Irregardless, I think it'll be too expensive for them to develop for PS3 with it's high costs and low user base so it'll be Wii or die.

Western developers still don't get it. They're starting to see some success with the DS, but they'll cling to making more of the same for the same market they are use to (PS3/360) at least until it just becomes too financially unsavoury to do so. Flops on HD systems are terribly expensive and hits are terribly expensive to make so for smaller - mid sized developers they may ultimately end up with no choice but to go Wii as they can't afford to continue to compete with higher budget games (Timeshift or Blacksite 51 vs Cod4 & Halo 3 for example).

The big guys will continue to put half-hearted attempts or 'casual' games to the Wii until they see other companies making more profit off Wii games than their getting off HD games. Then they'll follow the lead others have set but do it better as their financial might and know-how allows.

So in short, yeah, another 1-2+ years.
