The Pill That Prevents You Getting Drunk – Would You Try It?

Scientists are developing a ‘stay sober’ pill that could stop you from getting drunk, no matter how much alcohol you drink, a new report has revealed.

American and Australian scientists have carried out research focused on a pill that limits the effects alcohol has on the brain and the glial cells.

The experiment, conducted on mice, showed they didn’t get drunk, or even tipsy, despite consuming large amounts of alcohol.

The unnamed pill is being designed so that it shuts down brain immune responses. The experiment found that the animals who took the pill not only stayed sober, but their reflexes were far better than those who let their immune cells work normally.

“When a mouse gets drunk, it is quite similar to a human that’s drunk.  It can’t work its motor co-ordination properly. If you stop these immune cells from working, the animals didn’t get drunk.” Says researcher Mark Hutchinson, from the University of Adelaide.

According to the report, published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, researchers also found that the pill could help fight infections such as meningitis.

Do you think a ‘sober pill’ would take out the fun of drinking alcohol or would you be happy to say goodbye to those 'what did I do last night' moments?

This seems nice. But no, even if this thing is released, I still won't start drinking.

Wow that is scary, I could see hardcore alcoholics that took a drug like this killing themselves trying to get drunk.

Seems pointless, other than the "helps fight infections such as meningitis" part.

I can see why it would help alcoholics, but what's the point of drinking alcohol if you don't get drunk? Isn't that kind of the main purpose of drinking it?

Exactly what I was going to say, what is the point?

The idea is that they believe if the alcoholics do not get the pleasure they receive from getting drunk they will not drink. It could keep them off the alcohol for a long enough period of time that they might be able to stay sober without the drug for the long term.

and now instead of getting drunk, they're going to be addicted to this drug , Fighting fire with fire.

I wouldn't mind it. I am not a drunk.. I drink socially. So, I'd rather stay sober and just have a few drinks yet still be able to drive myself home safely. Its a win-win scenario!

Pointless as hell if you ask me. But it is still cool what science can do.

The only way I can see it being helpful is so you can have a designated driver and he can have like 2 or 3 beers (so he doesn't feel left out) but is still be nice and sober to drive.

Would kind of be fucked though if you've had like 12 beers and you're driving home (perfectly sober because of the pill) but the police stop you and find your blood alcohol level is like 0.20% so you get in shit.

Purpose defeated?

Also, This pill, from what I read, only prevents the brain and glial cells from feeling the effect of "tipsiness". That's a fucked up way to kill yourself ... I mean being sober while suffering the pains of alcoholic poisoning. Ouch. What an inhumane pill.
