Forums - Microsoft - Halo 4 dev: "there's a lot of stuff COD does beautifully that we should do better"

The people I play online with are ex-soldiers, military nuts, and cops. They prefer the "realism" of Call of Duty to the sci-fi world of Halo. It's easier to relate to. Once Call of Duty quit being about World War 2 and finally gave them a taste of "modern warfare", there was no turning back. Not many of them even bothered with World at War.

Microsoft will have to build a new IP based on modern warfare and do it better than the current fix, Call of Duty and convince/convert those fans. It's impossible. They will just have to settle for being king of the sci-fi FPS.

Microsoft does not need to compete with COD. Why does it need to risk to fight afranchise that, frankly, gives as much or more profit for the company than Halo?

Many people pay for Live just to play COD. And there are so many companies launching modern combat FPS that would be insane to ignore Halo or other newIPs with new esperience just because everyone seems to want the "reality of modern warfare"

Halo on the other hand has not seen steady increases. Halo3 outsold both Halo:ODST and Reach. Which shows that Halo's user base has peaked if Microsoft wants to grow that user base any bigger they will need to attract new gamers. Right now the Halo fanbase makes the Halo series, but Microsoft needs to expand.

Well, Halo 3: ODST wasn't a main title. AFAIK, it was just a DLC priced as a full game. An act of milking by Microsoft. And Last time I checked, Reach was ahead of Halo 3 by about 500k. With that in mind, I think we can see that Halo is on the rise. Definitely not on the level of COD, but it's still on the rise, slightly.

Not in over all sales, according to VGChartz sales data Halo3 has overall 11.32 million in sales while Reach only has 8.69. Of course Halo3 has been on the market a very long time and there is no guarantee that by the end of its life Reach won't surpass Halo3. However almost every new CoD to come out has increased its sales.

So is Halo really on the rise? sales show that Halo is at best around just as strong as it began on 360. The best outcome will see Halo:Reach lifetime sales coming in line with Halo3's.

Unless VGChartz data is wrong?

I never claimed the Halo franchise was growing rapidly, certainly not as fast as CoD. I was just refuting your claim that the series has peaked.

@Dark_Feanor, I agree with you (or you agree with me). I was saying that Halo/Microsoft should settle for being the CoD of Sci-Fi shooters. It would be impossible for them to jump into Call of Duty's world. At the same time, a lot of CoD fans would never play a Halo game, no matter how good it was. It's just not their genre. I never said scrap Halo! It's their flagship title!

...like being on both HD consoles?

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

I think its admirable for Microsoft and 343 to want to make a superior product to CoD. However since CoD:MW2 CoD titles have outsold Halo games. Infact the highest selling Halo title to date Halo3 lost out to CoD:MW2 sales wise. With Reach also failing to actually sell more copies. So this means that Microsoft needs to work harder to get more of the Halo user base online then the CoD user base.

But lets face it the majority of the people who purchase Halo or CoD do so with the intent of playing it online. So sales figures are the biggest indication of which title will have more online activity.

The day Halo over takes CoD on X-Box consoles is the day they retake their top spot! Until then they have no chance in competing with CoD! Also the CoD series since MW2 has been improving sales with every addition. If you don't count World at War CoD has been on a steady incline sales wise for years.

Right now the Halo fanbase makes the Halo series, but Microsoft needs to expand.

Halo4 is 343's chance to expand that market share. But they need to worry about loosing existing fans as well. If they do something that changes the Halo games too much they will loose dedicated fans but if they don't do anything new to attract new fans they won't expand!

halo reach is tracking ahead of 3 by 450k units. The only reason 3 will probably sell more is cause cea releasing this year and halo 4 coming next year. I think cod will start loosing users soon.

i believe halo 4 in 2012 will be the last halo untill 2014 and halo 5 wont come until 2015. and i think that because its a main game not an spinoff/prequel/expansion that will also help its sales. i believe halo 3 will sell 12 million, reach 11 million, and 4 will sell 12-13 million.

mw2 is at 12.6 and BO is at 13 million. I think MW3 will be at a far lesser quality than previous cods becuase infinity ward lost many of its devs, and i also think battlefield 3 will sell around 4.5-6 million on 360 taking away at least 500k units that mw3 would have got. For these reasons i think MW3 will sell 12-12.5. so i think halo 4 and mw3 will sell about the same. call of duty 2013 will likly sell far far less on 360 because that is the year the next box will likely come out.

Halo MCC will sell 5+ million copies(including digital)

halo 5 will sell 10 million copies(including digital)

x1 will pass ps4 in USA, and UK.

I stand by what I said, fact is look at CoD every year a new one comes out and almost every single new one to come out beats the last one within a year. While Halo has legs and takes years to catch up, the franchise has obviously reached a barrier. Now I was at HaloFest and listened to 343's plans to expand the Halo user base.

They specifically said the new target of the Halo franchise is 12 year old males, the guy from 343 said that the color of the alien blood isn't red and they are trying to make it suitable for 12 year olds. He said he wanted parents to buy their kids Halo and that all the toy's and products they are releasing are aimed at targeting the pre-teen market. That being said I am surprised the gaming media didn't go ape shit over those comments. I just looked for a source to back me up and realized it wasn't reported by any sites which sorta startles me because I was pretty shocked that Microsoft was aiming Halo at 12 year olds. Though the Mega blocks and such definitely confirm that they are doing so. It was just whack to hear it from their mouths!

Honestly if Microsoft can snag the pre-teens they might be able to expand their user base by a bit.  Also note while I said Halo has peaked I did also say that Halo4 is Microsoft's chance to expand. Which I guess means I obviously don't think the franchise has reached its full limitations or potential. Just at this moment the franchise is as good as its going to get.

Phil Spencer Microsoft Game Studios Vice President stated last year that we would not be waiting 3 years for each Halo game and that Microsoft would make Halo a more regular occurrence. Proof of Microsoft making Halo a regular occurrence  Halo 3 was released in 2007, Halo Wars was released in 2008, Halo 3: ODST in 2009, Halo: Reach in 2010, and soon Halo: Combat Evolved HD in 2011 and Halo 4 in 2012.

Phil Spencer however recently stated “People shouldn’t look at Anniversary as part of an annualized franchise,” saying “I love the fact we’re doing the Anniversary edition because I loved Halo 1. We just looked at it and thought it needed to be refreshed. It wasn’t part of us trying to get into an annualized rhythm with the franchise. It will be done in time for this holiday that is the 10th Anniversary for Halo. It felt like a good time to celebrate it.”

Fact is 343 already stated they have already created an idea of what they will do with the Halo franchise over the next ten years and that it will blow us away. Based on the past few years and comments from Phil Spencer and 343 I would assume that we will see a Halo game almost every year from now on.

Launching a title in the Halo franchise every two years would probably be smart, but the recent years suggest we are likely to see more annual releases. A two year wait at max if Phil Spencer and 343 are to be believed.
