If this is purely about power consumption, wait, I suppose.

If it's also about overheating issues, don't worry. My 60 GB barely gets hot if its on for 24 hours, and NEVER gets close to "abandon ship" mode. No problems whatsoever on that front.  

My PS3 does get pretty hot, but it is extremely quiet.

Cannot say the same about my 360, which always sounds like it is about to hover and take off.

Its true that the 40GB PS3 SKU's come with the 65nm, but it only has it for the CPU, not the GPU and also it lacks backwards compatibility with PS2 games.

In an interview with Japanese site AV Watch, Sony Computer Entertainment President and CEO Kaz Hirai has given the (hopefully) final word on the new console's innards. According to Hirai's statements, both reports were partially true: the 40GB PS3 indeed has a 65nm version of the Cell processor, but its RSX GPU is still 90nm. Nonetheless, the change is enough to shave power consumption quite considerably. Hirai quotes a 100W drop from maximum power consumption of 380W to 280W. With lower power consumption also comes lower noise levels, which Hirai says have dropped from 36dB to 30dB.

If the new 65nm CPU Cell processor is that important to you (which in my opinion not no difference between the 90nm which are in the 20GB, 60GB, 80GB) then get it. But if not I would try to get a 60GB off ebay, because it has full BC with PS2 games.

Your choice, but the 60GB or 80GB are the better choices.
