Forums - Gaming - 3DS vs. Vita

Which handheld do you think will be better?

Vita 190 44.60%

3DS 207 48.59%

Both will be the same 8 1.88%

I don't care 21 4.93%

Total:426

I prefer Vita over 3DS. But may reconsider 3DS after it gets a redesign, if at all.

No question about it, both :P, but I'm more excited for Vita. 3D is not a selling point for me (I can't "see" the 3D, something with my eyes) and the 3DS (as of now) don't have any good games that I feel I *must* play. The Vita so far has Uncharted and the better screen (that OLED screen is GORGEOUS) and an analog stick that comes built in - that way devs will *know* that each vita owner can use both - makes me want the Vita more. If I could only choose one, Vita by a landslide.

Hey, quick question: The PSP got certain types of games because of its optical disc based medium. Games could be bigger on the PSP than the DS, right? Well, with the PSV and the 3DS, aren't both consoles pretty much using cartridges? If that the case, wouldn't it be possible for Konami to make MGS HD Collection for the 3DS? What's stopping them?

Keyword: "HD".

Anyway, scaling a game up for a much more powerful platform is easier than making it work on a marginally more powerful platform, which might be another reason.

Even as I was typing, I knew someone was going to call me out on the "HD" in MGS HD Collection!

So far, the 3DS. It's getting a lot of games I'm interested in this holiday season.

The problem with the Vita is the ports. Yeah, the 3DS's library was also compromised of ports/remakes, but you couldn't get them on the current gen systems unlike the Vita ports.

Disgaea 3 - also available on PS3
UMvC3 - also on PS3
MGS HD Collection - also on PS3
ZOE - also on PS3
BlazBlue - also on PS3
FFX - also on PS3
Malicious - also on PS3
Street Fighter x Tekken - also on PS3
etc.

I'd rather get those games on the PS3, so yeah, I don't see the point of getting a Vita right now. Also, the memory card thing sucks.

Pretty much true, but that's one of Sony's selling points with the system. They might be able to do the whole "transfarring" thing talked about.

I just want to clarify two things about the games you listed above. Disgaea 3 on the Vita will have new scenarios and other content that the PS3 won't have. Also, it's a possibility that FFX HD might be the International version (I'm wishing it will be), which wasn't released in the US (it was released in Europe and Japan, I think), which would be a huge plus because of the extra bosses/content.

I'm excited for both. I got a 3DS at launch and after the rather terrible start it is finally getting great support and all of a sudden there's loads of games I would like to play. Nintendo made some huge mistakes during the launch period (price, support, 3D focus...) but the platform is back on track now - not because Nintendo changed direction but because of great 3rd party support.

I will get a Vita once the price drops and there is a platinum collection of games. I'm a late adopter when it comes to Playstation platforms. I don't like Sony's idea of basically making all games PS3 / Vita multi platform. The PSP struggled because all it got was ports and the Vita seems to be getting even more of them. Game consoles are defined by software. The way Sony handles this both of its platforms will get good support (big user base) but they will also cannibalize each others sales. But the Vita looks like a very quality piece of hardware with great 3rd party support.

3DS is using an older technology and cartridges are quite a lot smaller, they max out at 2GB, but apparently, for MGS3D, Konami managed to get a 4GB card working for the 3DS and that is what they are going to use for MGS3D. They would need 3 cartridges for the MGS HD Collection.

One of the games was also a PSP exclusive, I'm not sure either SONY or Konami would want Peace Walker on the 3DS.

Lastly, the Xbox 360, PS3 and PSP are all very similar in terms of graphical power, porting between the 3 systems would be pretty easy. Having to port the MGS3D to a far more limited system like the 3DS would be a nightmare.

I'm not ruling it out but it is highly unlikely and would take a LOT of work.

Peace Walker was a PSP exclusive, but it's being included in the HD Collection, which is going to be on PS3, PSV and 360, so it's not staying on Sony platforms. If they did do a MGS Collection on 3DS, they wouldn't need to put MGS3 in it.

The Xbox 360 is still not a competitor to the PSP though. I'm not ruling it out, I just think a 3DS version would seem out of place.

both the psv and 3ds cards have the same storage limts, launch 3ds carts were 2 gb with nintendo currently listing 8 GB as max, mgs is simply the first game being known to use the 4gb cart, though cosidering the ds original max was stated at 128mb and eventually  512 mb games were made they can go higher

http://nintendo3dsblog.com/nintendo-3ds-game-cards-can-store-up-to-8gb-worth-of-data

psv will also launch with 2 to 4 gb carts, with 16 gb listed as max

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/03/ngp-games-will-come-on-2gb-and-4gb-cards-with-room-for-save-dat/

do your research, Shutton
