July 2009 daveJ saidTrue the wii has a large lead now but by 2017 the most likely result will be 1. ps3 2. xbox360 3. wii <-- wii's successor launched in 2011 effectively killing sales of the wii

Plus, for the Vita, the price won't be as big an issue as it was with the 3DS, as the Vita has more value for the dollar.  Better quality screen, better graphics, and more features.  It's also launching at the exact same price as the PSP did against a $150 DS, and that has gone on to sell 71+ million units (and will probably end 80+ million).  I have no doubt that if Nintendo had left the price the same, even with a couple of Mario games, the Vita would have hands down won this handheld gen.  I think the sudden pricecut a mere 5-6 months from launch proves that Nintendo knew this, as well.

I like how people actually think this matters. Price and games. You got a good price and system sellers and your fine.

If we went by your logic....Xbox would have beat PS2.....PS3 wouldnt still be last place, and Wii would have been discontinued years ago.

I repeat....mass market price point and system sellers.

Quite a few people will think that matters, especially if advertised correctly to those who aren't 100% aware of those facts.  And you completely ignored where I stated the PSP was still able to sell 71+ million units (and is still selling) despite having launched against the $150 DS.  This time the gap isn't as much ($80, instead of a full $100)and the Vita can pull off WAY more than the PSP ever could.  Also, Sony looks to be delivering quite a few quality games at launch and beyond.  The competition is going to be more a little more intense this time around.

And if Sony can still pull it together to have at least a Dec 18th-24th launch in the US this year, then they are going to make out even better.

I can't help but notice that the 3DS was selling relatively poorly at $250 and is now selling at a similar rate to how the DS was selling at a similar point last year (which could be termed monstrously well). What this seems to imply to me is that people actually did want the 3DS but didn’t want to pay $250 for it; and I’m really starting to wonder whether people don’t like the idea of a $250 dedicated portable gaming system in-general.

About the only people I ever see making direct comparisons between smartphones and tablets and handheld gaming devices are on dedicated forums, and I tend to think that people see these as very different products; similar to how people tend not to make direct comparisons between PCs and Consoles in real life. Even then, the fact that a $500 smartphone sells amazingly well when it has been subsidized down to $100 or $200 by the phone company doesn't necessarily mean that people will see the $250/$300 PSV as a deal.

It should be interesting to see what happens ...

I think it's a question of who the audience for the DS really was and what that audience will do this time around.

The PSV is pretty much like the PSP, the only difference being that it may (or may not) capture more of the one-portable-only gamers this time. It has an uphill battle, but I think it's market is more assured than the 3DS's as of now.

The 3DS may lose the unknown part of their audience that wanted a slick-looking alarm clock, MP3-player and non-game software unit. How many people is that? It'll probably still be the portable of choice for kids getting a present, but will some of those have to, or want to, make do with their smart phones?

Anyway, it'll all come down to software library as a whole. 3DS certainly has the edge in popular titles as of now.

What mass market appeal does the Vita have in the west? none. It's going to have the same problem psp had. Vita in Japan is going to have trouble selling. That FFX HD port is still in development and i doubt it will move hardware like that gimmicky little deviants game. We've learned from the 3DS that games move hardware.

Call of Duty.

'nuff said.

Call Of Duty on a 5 inch screen?!?! yeh right dude. No one is gonna enjoy that. Try quickscoping on anything less than a 32 inch. Impossible.

..except for the millions of people who cried after a second analog stick for games like...you guessed it, Call of Duty.

Not everyone can be a hardcore gamer, and PSVita isn't the platform the 1337-gamer who has a killratio of 100/1. It is a PORTABLE console. If you want to play the real CoD, you gonna play it on a PC/PS3/360 anyway. For everything else, there's the Vita.

yeh it's a PORTABLE console. Some games just don't work on a miniature screen. That's why Call Of Duty is gonna be an absolute joke on the Vita.

I'll wait for the game to release actually before I judge that.

You obviously don't play Call Of Duty. Or you think that people buy the game for the single player.

Its a problem if your looking at a 5 inches screen from 1 meter away, but who would do that? I dont personally care about COD, but it will play just fine on a 5 inches screen being at a 1 foot and half distance.

No it won't. Anything less than 32 inch from any distance is a joke. Stop talking shit dude. It's obvious you don't care about COD. You just don't get it man.

Nintendo was smart dropping the price of the 3DS esp with the imminent arrival of the iPhone5!!! With the Vita launching so close to that monster it may take the wind out of Sony's new handheld!!!

The 3DS still has an image problem - many people still see it as another iteration of the DS, much like the iphone 2, 3, 4 failed because they were seen as 'just another iphone', or the PS2 failed because it was just another PS, and much of the market that the PS360 secured last gen pretend that glasses-less 3D is harmful to eyes.

You are talking shit dude. Somehow tons of PC gamers do perfectly fine with much more precise aiming without 32" screens.
