Forums - Microsoft - Jim Sterling on Cliffy B's Reaction to GoW3 Reviews - Vulgar, Spoiled and Greedy

Well, from what I've read, I don't think we can accurately tell if he was 'bitching' or not. People seem to be jumping the gun a bit here. Jim asked him why he was upset with an 8/10. He simply replied that he was a little upset that it scored lower than Gears 2. Should he be scorned upon for stating his slight discontent with a few reviews? No. I wouldn't call that bitching or whining.

Now, if he he replied in a hostile, powerful tone, like "I'm fucking pissed off. Those mutherfucking reviewrs can eat a dick!" Then, he would be a douche. But he didn't act in that manner. He didn't seemed too angry at the reviewers, just a 'little upset'. I think any dev that spends his heart & soul into a game should have the right to be a 'little upset' over the way some people view the game. Yeah, he should realize that everyone has their own opinion, but deep down, he can't help but feel a little upset over certain things.

And besides, we've only seen text. We don't know what kind of tone he had. We don't know if he was laughing or smiling. We don't know if he was serious or if he was joking. We have no idea on his body language or other nonverbal communication. These are all important factors that could drastically change the meaning of what he said.

Cliffy isn't completely innocent though. He has to realize that standards change. Gears 3 may be a better game than Gears 2. But should it be graded on the same scale as Gears 2? No. Standards change with time.

Also, he had no right to go and call a reviewer a hater. He had his own opinion and it should be respected. On the other hand, the reviewer could have been trolling, I don't know I didn't read it. I know a few inFamous 2 reviewers that seemed like they were reviewed by haters, so maybe Cliff does have a point. I'll have to actually read the Eurogamer review. Reviewers can be haters sometimes. Keep that in mind.

Long story short, I don't think we can label the guy a douche for expressing his slight discontent with a review of his masterpiece. In this crazy industry, reviewers due have a tendency to be 'haters'. Have you ever read a review where the reviewer clearly would not give the game a chance? I sure have.

It looks like this was just a joke taken out of context.

To give Cliffy some credit, he's voicing his honest opinion on the matter. I imagine the vast majority of game developers react and feel the exact same way when it comes to their own games but keep it to themselves.

he is whining about one reviewer giving his game an 8/10. Why should i give him some credit? His game is already hailed as an excellent one as it currently stands at an 91. The sheer arrogance from cliffy B is disgracefull. David jaffe is another guy that can't shut up. Most of ye clearly do not understand how review scores should be graded. Jim reviews games on a proper 10 point scale, unlike 90% of the "reviewers" out there. An 8/10 in the proper scales is classed as an excellent game but not a perfect one which gears 3 isnt.

Cliffy B's opinion does sound greedy and ungratefull.

I agree.

Machina, look at it like this -speaking their opinion or not- What if the people of Naughty Dog, bitched about a few reviews for their highly acclaimed Uncharted 2? It's called class. That's why, even if all devolopers feel that way, they keep it to themselves.

Wouldn't that come off as super douchey and arrogant? I mean our views on this one in particular is a bit hazy because it's Cliffy, already an "outspoken" person. When you boil it down he really shows some bad qualities. Qualities I've never seen in him before to be frank.

He's not bitching though. He's simply saying that he's a little upset that Gears 3 hasn't reached the same acclaim has Gears 2. It's not like he stated that he was depressed or pissed off about the score. He may be wrong for calling the Eurogamer reviewer a hater though, although he could very well be one. (I don't know, I haven't read it)

if you guys think thats whining , you haven't followed his twitter account, he LOVES to whine about almost everything, he is like a little baby, but thats why i actually followed him, not because of gaming news but to have a laugh at all his whining.

he once whined about how life is so cruel to him because cab drivers don't use ATM instead of cash, i'm serious.

I have followed him for quite some time, and I have no IDEA what you are talking about.  Cliff posts his mind about a lot of things and he does, admitedly let his tweets ramble all over the place, not just video games.  But whine?  And consistently?   Sorry dude, that is BS.

Regarding the tweet about cab drivers you were referring too, he said something about if they claim to take cards, they should take cards, not act like the machine is broken.  As a business traveller, that's not whining, thats the freaking truth.  I LOOK for taxis that take cards, so they shouldn't BS me when the fare is done because they want their tip in cash.

Personally, i think the hate for Cliff is mostly rooted in jealousy.  And Jim Sterling's hypocrisy, as noted already in this thread, is amazingly dismissed to focus on Cliff.  NEVER would have seen that coming from THIS community...HAHA

If it wasn't for Twitter, these inner rants, which most people have and keep to themselves, wouldn't get out at all.  There are professional sports associations who have banned their players from using Twitter during games and other times.

Lets be honest, in today's market an 8/10 is not considered glowing by most gamers today. You only have to read the forums to see how most gamers feel about 8/10. 8/10 games are considered renter games or buy used for highly discounted. They do not inspire the gamer of today to purchase the game day one at full retail price.

Anyway, I rather get the honest feeling of someone than the one everyone wants to hear. Yeah Cliffy did not like any score under 90 and thats to be expected of someone who spent years on a project, loved what they did and felt it was a great achievement even if it's not. I hate the fact that it's so easy to jump on such statements and attempt to make them bigger than they are. It's his feeling and he has a right to it. We may not agree with it but we do not have to because as human we all go their.

As far as I am concerned people like Jim Sterling is the problem more than Cliffy B believing his game should be a 10. To make such a big deal of such a statement is more childish than Cliffy believing his game should not score lower than a 9.

@bolded. I guess Sqaure Enix should be furious with a score lower than 10 considering the development cycles.

OT: I think he has a point. Sure, they're not hater reviews, but kind of unfair ones. A 9 or (at least) 8,5 seems more appropriate.

Cliffs got a point though, its a weird thing thats been happening all year.

KZ3 is better than KZ2 but rated lower.
Infamous 2 is better than Infamous 1 but rated lower
LBP 2 is better than LBP 1 but its rated lower
According to all accounty Gears 3 is better than Gears 2 but rated lower.

I honestly think its impossible for Uncharted 3 to match Uncharted 2's metacritic at this point because nearly every sequel this year has gotten a lower meta.

To think, I just stood behind Cliff at my GameStop not even an hour ago. No joke either. He was looking Dead Island on the 360, but my store only has the PS3 version (360 sold out).

Did you punch him in the guts? Kicked him in the groin? Gave him a wedgie at the very least?

Has anybody considered the possibility that cliffy was being sarcastic? I'm sure he was only jokingly saying that 8/10 was a bad score, but as usual jim sterling blows things out of proportion when he sees an opportunity to get on his soapbox.

Not sure why he bothers to compare to Gears 2. The standard then is not the standard now.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Jim Sterling is vulgar, spoiled and greedy, yes.

*ahem*

He's absolutely right here. EuroGamer are strict scorers, and an 8 from them is a compliment, whatever they gave to Gears 2. Also, the artist is not really in a good position to judge his work of art. See: George Lucas and his bullshit Star Wars Special Edition changes and how they "improve everything" and "will make the franchise last forever." Han shot first!
