Forums - Gaming - What is all the fuss about a second analog on a handheld? Why is it so important?

I am completely baffled about the all negative press the 3DS is getting for not having a second analog stick. We have media outlets calling for a remodel,  one that would screw over already the current installbase, which Nintendo has never done with there remodels: DS, DS Lite, and DSXL all coxiested in the same market together, never ever mking anyone feel pressured or feel forced to upgrade to be able to  enjoy the console at its fullest. <---  this should always be a priority when remodels are introduced. If Nintendo did this it would be the #1 worst mistke the company has ever made..but this thread isnt about Nintendo making  or not making that choice.

What annoys me about second analog  is is it relly need needed?

What Handheld created Xxperience needs 2 analog's sticks?

I want everybody to think about this for a minute

and if your answer comes to none.. like I almost assure 100% you to get to then the next question is:

Why is it important?

There is a difference between a console and handheld xxperience .. theres a fine line there and it should never be crossed.

and like good like little gamers that I know we all are we should respect that. so limitations should be placed on a handheld to conserve this xxperienece.

So my finalquestions to everbody is:

If the game requires a second analog sticks then shouldnt be on a handheld correct? and if a console game cannot be made to be a handheld xxperience then it has no business there correct..Ever..correct?

please somebody enlighten me.

Just because a handheld has two analog sticks doesn't mean it isn't a handheld anymore. The reason a lot of people including myself are excited about it is because it allows developers a shit ton more flexibility with control schemes. Many upon many PSP games for example were very limited due to the way the camera had to be handled. You would have to use the L/R nubs on the back or even the Triangle, Square, X, Cricle to control it.

A lot of DS game have cameras that are fixed and not movable. Not all games require the camera to be moved but FPS games for example need this badly. I doubt Sony could make Uncharted that well for the Vita with a fixed camera.

Nintendo doesn't NEED to have it but it would be highly beneficial.

Because it's like a controller and that is a good thing.

3DS does not need a second analog stick.

Wii U Nintendo Network ID, Borode

XBOX Live ID, Borode

Dunno. I never felt a DS/PSP games I played needed it, I don't see why Vita/3DS need one but it wouldn't hurt. Not having one and then making that retarded peripheral is stupid though. It's optional though so whatever.

I dont think they need, having them doesnt hurt, adding one late is stupid.

The Touch screen already acts as a second analog stick.. In fact, it is a better alternative because it's more like a mouse.

I would never want a second analog stick on the 3DS.

well a second analog stick is needed if its needed. i'd like to know why Ninty (other then wht Rol said) is the reason for the so called second analog peripheral.

it looks stupid and complicated to me.

if Nintendo did redesign 3DS it wouldn't be for the worse and you know it. since the analog peripheral's announcement and conformation by Ninty. i'm sure a redesign will be released i'm just not sure when.

3DS may have been a rush release from all that has happened so far.

so OP if theres no need for one, then there wouldn't be one. but now it looks like they'll be 2.

Agree 100%. The biggest benefit of a second analog stick would be the improved camera controls. It just gives the developers more freedom in regards to level design and gameplay.

1st point, you forgot about DSLite to DSi, one has GBA backward compatible and the other is not but has access to DSiware. So your not really right in saying that none of those upgrades were needed. If you wanted the full experience you would have to have one of the later models.

2nd point, touch screen for camera controls range from meh to suck. sticks are way better for that. Mario64 had decent camera control, but games like KH sucked hard and FPSs just sucked in general in this department on DS. PSP fared no better, wasnt until MOH that they somehow figured it out, it was still meh camera control, but at least it was mostly playable. im not saying its totally needed, but would have worked better if it had a 2nd stick

3rd point, i see your one of those "those games should not be on handhelds". thats a load of crap, what were YOU playing on GB?? Mario, FFlegends, Tetris, Zelda, Pokemon, are those not just small black/white versions of games you played on NES?? Except for Pokemon which is a JRPG and you dont get more "console" than that. Christ!! GBA best selling games were ports or updates of SNES games. Which were console games. Sony just took it to the next level, where Ninty handhelds were gens behind their consoles, SOny made one that could come damn close to their home system at the time. 3Ds is going for the same. Someone look at Ninty's or anyone else's old handhelds and show me games that should have not been made. By that logic, the GB library would have been REALLY small

Does it not have to do with better control mechanics for 3D environmental games? One analog for controlling movement and another for controlling the camera? I must say that the addition of a second analog is definitely convenient for those types of games. Also, maybe the addition of a second analog could also be for future releases of big FPS like Call of Duty on the system.
