Forums - Sony - Sony should stop using Kevin Butler for their dark-toned games.

Frankly, I don't know. Butler's certainly an acquired taste, but if SON¥ dumped this character, they would have to build an entirely new public image from scrap. Or bring back the baby.

i agree to a point cause without KB sony would likely be still 8m behind MS.

games like Resistance and KZ may need a more direct focus v KB's brand of comedy.

@those saying Sony shouldn't get rid of KB completely

That's not what I'm saying. I know KB is great for Sony. I'm fine with Sony using him to advertise the PS3, MOVE, and light-hearted games. My only gripe with him is how he's used in nearly every game. Games like God of War, Killzone, Resistance are supposed to dark & gritty experience and should have ads that reflect that.

Resistance 3 does have a normal commercial, and it has one with Butler, too. It seems Killzone 3 also had a very short commercial without Kevin Butler, as well.

I hate the guy, so, if they remove him for all games and ads and everything, .... I'll be glad :)

I don't know how it's possible to hate the guy, considering he has brought a much better ad campaign for Sony than their older ones. I think the ad campaign with Kevin Butler seems to be catching some attention of people who watch TV.

I just don't like the guy, and don't find him particularly funny.

No.... they shouldn't you obviously dont know about marketing. Your sitting on your couch watching TV and a McDonalds commercial comes on, showing a Huge juicy well made Big Mac. Your like WOW that looked great! you get off your ass run to McDonalds order a Big Mac combo get home open the Big Mac box thing a realize the Big Mac is nowhere as Big, well made or good as that commercial made it out to be. The commercial has done its job. Commercials main task is not to representable the item in its "Reality" form. It is to make the product look appealing. remember Advent Children commercials where sephiroth was in every clip but in reality hes only in the last 15mins of Movie. You gotta understanding marketing to understand KB's usage in games where he maybe shouldn't be. its not about how YOU want it portrayed

Yeah, a small Big Mac is BAD, of course you're not going to advertise that. However, the deep, gritty & somewhat dark atmosphere found in games like Killzone/God of War is GOOD. The atmosphere helps define the games. KB advertisements did a bad job of promoting that atmosphere. If Sony made a TV ad showing the immersive, deep atmosphere one would experience in these games, as opposed to their easy-going, light-hearted approach, I'm pretty sure it woulf have gotten more people interested in the game.

The main reason I made this thread was because I was thinking about how Sony was going to promote The Last Guardian. The game will likely be a serious experience that doesn't take itself lightly. It would be a shame if Sony had KB making a commercial with it while making jokes & such.

The biggest games on the PS3, COD, GTA, MGS, AC, etc. All feature deep & immersive stories (not necessarily good) and their ads were successful in promoting those experiences.

you are still missing the point. The way you want the games to be marketed only appeals to the informed gamer. If SONY can tricked a parent into gettin there Kid God of War 3 then the commercial has succeeded when your way would turn parents away thus loosing. The Last Gaurdian will probably be hard game to market so if having KB in it helps get the message across to viewer even if it no way shape or form represents the game .. actual representation is not focus. The focus is gettin the attention of wide audience. GOW represented in its true form would turn more ppl away then bring in.

sony can learn a thing or two from microsoft and their ads. Primarily the halo reach add campaign. Beautiful trailer that actually made people see the game. kb basically just makes fun of the games and you barely see them.

Uhh this isn't the Wii we're talking about, we're talking about the PS3. A system where the most popular games, Metal Gear Solid, Grand theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, and to an extent Call of Duty where all successful by appearing to have hardcore, dark, serious, & deep, atmosphere. The Ps3 community wants to play games they think are hardcore, even if the games aren't hardcore. The games above appear to be hardcore experiences and they were marketed that way. They weren't seen as easy, light-hearted experiences & they were all hugely successful.
