Forums - Gaming - Would PS3-360 have been better off if they had 1-2 gig of cheaper DDR2 ram rather than what they ended up with

Thank you for the translation, I actually had to Google "semelhanca" for a minute there.

I know that GDDR3 is dissimilar from DDR3. That's why I said that the speed is more equivalent to DDR5. But I am almost positive that the OP is talking about the general system RAM, not the VRAM, though I admit I don't know what kind of system RAM the HD twins have.

All right, I just lookedi t up; he's not referring to DDR3, he's referring to the PS3's XDR DRAM, like you said; but the original point of the OP is about the system RAM, rather than the VRAM, so bringing up VRAM in th conversation is erroneous.

HD consoles uses VRAM memory for system too because they not need low latency... the PC needs... so the XDR (PS3), GDDR3 (PS3/360) are memory with high latency... the DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 are memory with low latency.

The speed is better in memory with high latency because that the DDR/DDR2/DDR3 memory is so slow compared with GDDR3/GDDR4/GDDR5.

DDR5 doesn't exists... just GDDR5.

I wasn't aware that the 360 didn't have discrete system RAM; I made certain assumptions about the parlance used in the OP and now I feel foolish. Ah well.

Yeah it probably would have been better that way.

No. The games needs memory with more speed (GDDR) than low latency (DDR)... graphics needs that.

The confunsion in this topic is the DDR2/DDR3 memory is not the same kind of GDDR3 used for graphics... just low end video cards like NVIDIA GT 520 uses DDR2/DDR3 for memory.

I'm a computer noob so how low of a graphics card is the GT 520?

Like ethomaz said, more ram is important, but so is speed. ddr3>ddr2.
So, both consoles could have benefitted from more ram, but ddr3 was a must imo.

The 360 uses integrated RAM for memory and video, so I would say that speed is important for the 360 in regards to memory.

The worst GeForce today... can't run Crysis (any resolution) or MW4 (over 1280x1024 resolution).

The 360 and PS3 use a two generation ago high-end video card... way better than GT 520.

VRAM needs speed to work well... more RAM is needed too but for VRAM speed is more precious.

Your 4Gb RAM is just for general purpose... not for Video RAM (VRAM).

What video card you have?

The DDR3 RAM in the HD consoles isn't their VRAM either. That speed is more like DDR5.

Both consoles uses GDDR3 (PS3 uses XDR too)... there are no similarity between DDR3 and GDDR3... the GDDR3 is for Graphics or VRAM.

You are just confounding GDDR memory with DDR memory... they are different technologies (GDDR4 is more like DDR3).

Edit: So the 360 doesn't have discrete system RAM; makes me wonder what the OP means in this case.

I mentioned the 360 as well as the PS3to see if it would help both systems  one or none, so what i was getting at was and it seems it would apply more so to the  PS3 seeing it's memory isn't shared is a ps3 with 1-2 gig of ddr2 system ram coupled with its gpu with its 256 meg vram as opposed to 256/256 just as my comp is running 4gig ddr2 ram and the gpu is  2   galaxy  gtx 465 in sli 1024 mb each GDDR5 memory

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

Ah ok thanks for the info.

So I take back what I said earlier in the thread.

i'm learning so don't mind me. continue plz

They should have given then 512MB of dedicated GPU ram and then 1-2 gigs of relatively slow ddr2 for system

Xbox and PS3 dont have any DDR3 based memory.

Probably said already GDDR3=DDR2 slightly tweaked. XDR=Competitor to DDR2/ XDR2 = competitor to DDR3.

Besides GDDR4 is NOT BASED ON DDR3 but on DDR2.

DDR2=GDDR3/GDDR4
DDR3=GDDR5

Also XDR is inferior to DDR3.

Both Consoles are on DDR2 level. GDDR3 is nothing else then an enhanced DDR2 module. XDR is not better then GDDR3 basically there is no Ram Speed advantage between PS3 and 360. As xdr is faster but offers less bandwith practically giving away its advantage. In Raw Numbers both Consoles are GDDR3 Level=Enhanced DDR2.
