Forums - Gaming - Microsoft to announce Blu Ray add on for the X360?

It's a good idea, but it would probably be coming too late in the generation. At this point they may as well withhold Blu-Ray for the Nextbox.

Then why bought everyone an HD tv?

Because it's cool or the wife's husband went out and bought it.

We can see the difference and care for a variety of reasons, but ask most people and they either can't see a difference or don't care.  Also, it's pretty hard not to buy an HDTV nowadays.

Edit: A thought just came to me.  Those "most people" who "can't see a difference or don't care" are Xbox 360 users hence, no need for Blu-ray on the Xbox 360, right?

Nope, it's just one of those things.  The people into technology will get it, but your average person when presented with a Zune streamed 1080p movie and a fantastic Blu-Ray of the same movie either won't see the difference or they just won't care.  People into games, gadgets, and what-not absolutely care about the difference in quality but everyone else just doesn't get why one is better than the other.

It's like asking an audiophile what kind of head phones to buy.  They will go on and on about all sorts of stuff you don't know anything about and don't care.  What you care about is if they're comfortable and the music sounds good.  To most people, if they care about HD at all, they will want to know it's in HD and it looks good.  The fact that it's uncompressed audio and video will be completely lost on them.

Dude, just stop making general sweeping assuming one-sided off-topic out of context statements to downplay the possibility of Blu-ray coming to the Xbox 360.

This rumor comes up every once in a while. It's not true. Even if it was it wouldn't even matter. It wouldn't give Microsoft and edge against the competition. In fact, it would give Sony and the PS3 the edge. Why? People will say "wow so the had this day 1!? damn I was missing out".

I don't expect the Xbox 360 to ever get any sort of Blu-Ray attachment. Too late in the lifecycle. I do however expect the Xbox 720 to have Blu-Ray support for movies and games.

@those answering twesterm....

He's right. Mass consumer doesn't care so much about bluray/ real 1080p. That's why bluray's haven't taken over DVDs yet.

I know one person with a stand-alone player.... why? because what's the point? To may more for quality that is almost matched by a up-scaled dvd. I have one Bluray myself.. Avatar. Everything else I'm fine with DVD. If the cost was the same, I'd buy bluray, but if its a few bucks more.. I buy DVD as does the mass consumer.

Hell if the mass consumer was so up in arms about as good as possible HDTV... cable would be dead as Satellite is far better source for TV. But, they don't care and cable is still top dog.

Same reason Wii is the biggest Netflix box... mass consumer is ok with DVD quality.

There is no way MS is going to do this. It is a waste for the mass consumer and would potentially get in the way with their next console which will surely have bluray.

I doubt many people actually stream 1080p movies. Internet prices for those kinds of speeds are just way too high right now.(at least in America)

Can't you rent Blu-Ray movies with Netflix? I'm sure people will notice a huge difference when comparing a Blu-ray movie to a netflix stream.

No one mentioned "mass consumer."  Twesterm made that up just to make an argument.  Here is what started it when he said:

"The problem with that argument is you think most people care about that."

He doesn't know what I was thinking, and he was wrong in assuming that.  I clarified myself, but he continued to take things out of context to downplay this potential news.  Simple.  Let's stay focused.

That would be completely pointless. You can't use it for games as that would alienate all those without the add-on, and while it could be used to enable Blu-Ray movie playback on your 360, a standalone Blu-Ray player would do the same.

Does anyone else think this would add sales to the PS3?
If I walk into a store and see a 360, and an add on brd drive, then see the ps3 with built in blu-ray.. ?

The choice is simple really. But then again, That same argument could be made now. If Microsoft were to add it internally then that would be stupid for several reasons,

they should just wait to add any sort of Blu-Ray until the next box.

̶3̶R̶D̶   2ND! Place has never been so sweet.

If this is true...this is going to be awesome...and the fact that the Blu ray player is now like $60 dollars, they are going
to sell a lot of units if they price it near that price range...
