Forums - Gaming - Deus Ex accused of being racist, SE responds. Video inside

I think what people are missing as far why some people consider it racist, is that basically that's the exact voice and dialect that was basically always used for racist interpretations of black people back in the day when portraying them as intellectually inferior in some way.

It's like the voice blackface actors would use in minstril shows.

Hilarious voice. But, a character is a character. It's not racist at all, they just tried too hard. Also, if the character were white, you wouldn't hear much criticism necessarily.

I really dont wanna get into this... but that last sentence really gets on my nerves everytime somebody says.

Why does it get on your nerves? I can understand they are different circumstances but it is true.

If the only black people in the game were portrayed like this I could see an argument, being that I have seen a variety of portrayals of black characters and I'm fairly early in the game I don't think this is a valid complaint ...

+1

Guizmo

Considerring the game portrays a variety of people, from a range of ethnicities and in a wide array of socio-economic roles, this really is picking at straws. I actually don't think I've played a game where other ethnicities (as in not white caucasian... and male for that matter) are so well represented to be honest.

if you go to the South thats how most people( not just blacks) speak

Most people in the south speak nothing like that. Also the video was suprising, but not offensive.

Being from the deep south, I can tell you that no one currently uses the dialect that Letitia uses. Saying that any American speaks like this character is like saying there are still Americans that use Elizabethan English in 2011. It's not racist it's just ignorant.

This here is dead on correct.

As a matter of fact, this is not a regional or social/economic thing.  It's a generational thing.  Very few people under 60 talk like this at all right now.  But this game takes place in the future.  In Detroit.  And she talks like someone (as adriane23 mentioned) from The Color Purple which took place in the early 20th century.

And it sounds like a man.

I'm going to stop short of calling it racist, but it's definitely inappropriate and ill concieved.  Hopefully this isn't indicative of the overall voice acting, or else this seems like the 2nd coming of the first Shenmue, only this time with the lead being played by a poor man's Keanu Reaves ...

Exactly, Letitia (despite her man voice) looks to be in her late 40s, which would put her in her late 20s to early 30s in 2011. There are zero Americans that use this dialect in the present time let alone in 16 years.

Hmm, I wonder if Letitia's nickname is Mammy......

I am the Playstation Avenger.

First time I heard the "trash lady" speak I just thought it was terrible voice acting. Racism No, but horrible voice acting.

People get their feathers riled up too easily these days.

So much emotion in her voice yet so little in her face....videogames still have a long way to go before they become realistic.
