Forums - Gaming - Wii U no longer exciting, Apple’s iPad prove it

"Probably as the time for Nintendo’s next gen HD console (Wii U) arrives, it may no longer fuel any kind of excitement especially if this Apple’s latest innovation has to go by.

And that is Airplay, touted as one of the most attractive selling features available in Apple’s range of iOS products. AirPlay offers the ability to stream video, music or photos from your iOS device to an Apple TV which then displays the content on an high definition television in 720p resolution and stereo sound.

That’s not all, this is where we would like to introduce AirPlay Mirroring. The feature was marketed to stream an exact mirror of the content displayed on an iPad 2 to an Apple TV which a lot of people find it very useful as a teaching or presentation tool. Or is it?

We all have heard about iPad as a gaming platform and it’s potential to break down those home consoles such as PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U possibly coming next in the line.

So, what do you think of that really happening as Apple slowly polishing its slick feature with the releases of iOS 5 beta updates?

Apple iOS 5 with AirPlay Mirroring is expected to hit the iPad, iPhone and other supported devices in Fall this year while Nintendo’s Wii U out in 2012."

can't say i agree... even thought there are some similarities i'm still anticipating what nintendo will reveal for the wii u next year in terms of games among other things

Ultimately, it will boil down to the games; specifically Nintendo published/developed titles.

This is a restatement of the obvious as it is a given that these games will only be playable on Nintendo hardware and that every Nintendo device will have at minimum, the tried and true franchises spanning the game development history of Nintendo.

While the Wii more or less proved that it does not require the best 3rd party games of a hardware generation to generate the most sales, the novelty and accessibility factor of the Wii is not likely something that Nintendo will be able to repeat with the Wii U; certainly not at the same level of runaway sales. 3rd party support still matters greatly as with any hardware platform, but the question should be what unique experience will those games offer that simply cannot be experienced on other platforms.

About the only area in which I believe Nintendo could potentially have another runaway hit on their hands, will be on the issue of price, as in it is priced significantly lower than most are predicting, making the decision to buy one an easier one.

Taking the obvious comparison of a network/HDTV linked iPad as a "comparable" gaming platform, the most basic, bare bones iPad will still be priced twice as much as the Wii U unless Nintendo is still under the delusion that general consumers will in fact buy their hardware at any price, a notion that was not supported by the first 4 months of 3DS sales.

Other than that, the issue will be raised as far as the value of game specific devices (consoles, gaming handhelds) to the general consumers responsible for the sales enjoyed by both the Wii and the DS.

If nothing else, the Wii U will still offer conventional controls (ie buttons and control pads, analog sticks) as well as what will presumably be a more game focused entertainment experience.

And again, the point of what Nintendo is doing is ONCE MORE missed in an article. Nintendo knows how to design games, and things that entertain, and they do what they do in service of game designer wants and needs, so people are entertained. Individuals see what Nintendo does, find something similar, and then declare than Nintendo is doomed. Seriously? The point of what Nintendo does is missed completely.

It's all about the games.

Unless this puts out high quality material it won't steal any thunder of the Wii U, minus the crowd that is seeking more of a media center than a gaming device.

For one, the games on the Wii U will probably end up being more appealing, what with the increased third party support and Nintendo's usual amazing first party games. Plus, playing games with just a touch screen is still less than ideal, which gives the Wii U the edge, what with actual buttons and analog nubs.

"We all have heard about iPad as a gaming platform and it’s potential to break down those home consoles such as PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U possibly coming next in the line."

And just to point out,, this is bullshit. The iPad isn't making a huge hit on the console market. Handhelds, yes. Consoles, no. The iPad and iPhone are not meant for long, epic games like the consoles are. It's known for short, little games you can play on the bus, which is what the 3DS and Vita are also targeting. Hence, the iPad making more of an impact on the high profile hardware that has the same goal.
