I am telling you right now.. and you'd better listen.
Don't buy second-tier electronics.
Stick with proven manufacturers such as Sony, Sharp, Panny, Samsung, etc. etc.
Don't go with one that's called Sorny or Panaphonic :D

I read those on CNET.com. Their pricetags are still insane and I remember reading that they are kinda dangerous or something?
Now, I've been reading something on those OLED TV's. Those are the future right there!
I'd say go for a Sharp. When it comes to quality, they are the number one with LCD. Sure, it might be a bit more expensive than Samsung or Panasonic, but it's worth it.
I'm going to buy the Sharp LC32 RD2E, because of the 100Hz en REALLY fast 4ms repsonse time (ideally for gaming).
If it's a Sony then all the following Full HD models are considered to be at the top and a good value for your money
(from the most expensive with more spec to the cheapest)
KDL 40X3500 > 40W3000 > 40D3000 > 40V3000
If it's a Samsung
The LE40M91 is a good TV though a little overpriced for its capacity, therefore I'd recommend the LE40M73BD with roughly the same spec but with a lower price
The Samsungs are also known for having slightly saturated colours.

I just did a ton of research and ended up buying a sony bravia 46 inch 1080p. If you want...send me an IM with exactly what you want and are willing to spend and I can be more helpful.
From what I have read rocketpig is right. Anything below 42" and 720p will be fine.
I would however disagree with the color level argument because while the best plasma on the market probably ranks highest in color level you will tend to find many lcds in the top 5.
According to Cnet. Panasonics top of the line plasma is first in this area. While Sony's Xbr series is second. However, the xbr ranks higher in response time 120mhz with less ghosting and no burn in as many plasmas do.
The problem is that both of these televisions are probably out of your price range...I dont know.

Since the human eye is incapable of distinguishing past 60fps, 120hz sets are an advertising gimmick and nothing more. Completely pointless.

You're right; several LCDs have very good color depth. The thing is that there are more that have poor color depth.
As with almost everything in the HDTV world, everything should be evaluated on a model-by-model basis.

I just want to add one thing - 1080p is good if you plan on using your tv as a PC monitor in addition to everything else.
Also, just because a tv is smaller than 40" doesn't mean that extra pixels that 1920x1080 has will disappear - you just have to sit closer. You could easily tell the difference with a 1920x1200 17" laptop display if you sat close enough. 1080p doesn't make a difference if you don't sit (relatively) close to your display. (I don't think they make 1080p tv's smaller than 37" anyways)

Here in Sunny So. Cal. I just got a 58" Samsung 1080p DLP for $1699. Samsung makes a great DLP T.V. and the bulky back is gone.
I love it and it's much cheaper than LCD and Plasma.
