Forums - Sales - If blu-ray wins? Will it affect the console war?

WRONG

if the BR win, people, particularly in US, the PS3 will be more attractive
for me, this is the only way the PS3 can match the Xbox360 sales in US,

of course, as MS will soon launch the new Xbox360 HD, things are more difficult to predict.

Why would it be more attractive?

By the time one format wins, standalone players will be significantly less expensive than the PS3. Right now it is more attractive because the PS3 is about the same price or cheaper than nearly all stand alone players. A year from now that won't be the case. The PS3 will probably be ranging from $350 - $450. Stand alone bluray players will be starting around $200. No contest.

Like I said, its a one way street. PS3 helps bluray, bluray does not help PS3.

It will affect the generation of consoles though, at least Sony and MS next-gen.

When people are forced to upgrade their TV's in 09, it may make a difference. Most people will be looking for small HDTV's, and if the PS3 can be priced below 300 by that point and play the only HD disc format, I would have to assume thats a plus.

People aren't being forced to upgrade. This is an extremely common misconception I see thrown around internet forums all the time. Cable companies are being forced to broadcast digitally and therefore SD sets will require a digital conversion box to receive a signal (already available in most every metro area already).

I haven't had an analog signal pumped into my house in damned near a decade. I first got digital cable in 1999 or about two years before I bought my first HDTV.

Well, I will say one thing good about Blu-Ray: it has a better name than HD DVD. I find it very uncomfortable trying to say HD DVD. Heck, I'm tempted to say HDVD. Sure, it's easier to read it, but saying it is a different story.

Not unless DVD's go away. People still seem indifferent to HD and not really see the advantages of it. Even if it beats HD DVD, Unless studios drop DVD format in favor of blueray of being the absolute only standard, it will mean nothing. Also the PS3 will still have to get to a mass market price of under $199.

Consumers are migrating from DVD->BluRay at a faster rate than they did in the VHS->DVD transition.

The only people who make this 'no one cares' argument are Xbox/HD-DVD supporters who have accepted the death of the format and now wish no one wins.

Them, and those of us who actually, truly don't care.

I'll consider buying HD discs when they cost only 10-20% more than DVD or when I can't get things in DVD anymore. A 16:9 aspect ratio, reduced footprint, and low power consumption are plenty good reasons to replace an old CRT with a new LCD. Pixel count really doesn't matter to me.

Cable companies are not being forced to boardcast digitall, local stations are. So far all local stations are boardcasting (digital) in HD!!!

In fact Time Warner Cable wants to go total digital so they can have more room for HD channels. Yet it possible they will not be allow to.

Until DVD is dropped entirely, Bluray winning won't really give that much of an advantage.

Ah, good catch. I was thinking about my digital cable and typed cable company instead of television network.

I do not think it will effect anything other then what type of DVD you buy. They are still going to make games for the PS3 and xbox360 even if hd dvd and or blue-ray dies. Just that the dvd player that comes with it will not work that well.

Uh.... Proof?  Last i saw it was the exact opposite.  Blu-ray sales just recently passed VHS sales afterall.
