Forums - Politics - Libya almost liberated now what?

So today I read an article saying the Libyan Rebels are advancing on Tripoli. Apparently the military base outside Tripoli that was supposed to defend the city was surrendered. Tanks, rocket launchers, artillery peices all abandoned for the rebels. The rebels then advanced from the base taking parts of Tripoli. The rebels took Green Square and Tripoli is almost completely in rebel hands!

Also according to the BBC Gaddafi is desperatly trying to flee the country. But apparently no country wants to take him. So rebels are going to take the rest of the city in a matter of time, no doubt they have surrounded the city and are beginning to take it street by street. So what happens next? Gaddafi will obviously be killed as I doubt the rebels will let him go alive.

Will the rebels unite and launch formal elections? Or will Libya end up like Somlia with the rebels turning on one another and started a violent decades long civil war? Or will Nato and the UN send in forces to help Libya democratically elect a leader?

Whats the immediate future in Libya, do you have hope? or do you think all is lost? What about Gaddafi is he as good as dead? Are the rebels a good alternative?

How will Libya look once Gaddafi is gone?

It will certainly be interesting to see what sort of government the rebels really intend to set up. I'm imagining some sort of democracy predicated upon tribal lines

The big question is what will become of Qaddafi and his sons? I'm betting the World Court wants to get its hands on Qaddafi for Lockerbie purposes...

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

now they build, create a democracy, build a broken political system, become corrupt, become a military super power, become the envy of the world, become hated by some countries for having freedoms, sell bonds, man its the revolutionary war all over again.

we can only hope they do better then our current world leaders and 10X better then those who came before them.

Now what? Now western nations continue to sink money into conflicts that will only breed more contempt for us.

Mohammad Al Qathafi is in safe hands, and he's going to be transferred to Benghazi for investigations. IIRC, they're considering pardoning him from any punishment since he hasn't partaken in the whole conflict (Al Jazeera spoke with him on the phone).

Saif Al-Islam has been arrested, and is now gonna be in the hands of the International Criminal Court.

Khamis is probably holed up in his father's complex. The NTC's priority is to arrest them, and have them tried rather than shoot them on the spot.

Now as for whether the tribes will turn against one another: The rebels all had one goal in mind, which is to end Qathafi's regime, and as such, I doubt it will turn into Somalia (which came to be due to completely different circumstances), not to mention they're not bloodthirsty people. They just want their freedom. But as the leader Mustafa Abdul Jalil said to Al Jazeera, the rebels need to listen to their higher ups as well as the majority of the Libyans rather than acting on their own accord. Otherwise, incidents like Abdel Fattah Younes's (may God have mercy on his soul) assassination, and the recent clash between rebels and Mohammad Al Qathafi's bodyguards, despite orders from the NTC higher ups not to attack him, can repeat itself, which would only harm the direction of the revolution.

For those of you who don't know, Qathafi let out false rumors that Abdul Fattah Younes is working with him, and it poisoned the mind of some rebels who decided to go rogue and assassinate him in "revenge".

And I don't see how "all is lost" either. This is a victory (it will be official when they get their hands on Khamis, Moussa Ibrahim and Muammar).

Things were looking far bleaker months ago, where it was a stalemate.

easy part is done, i guess. Most difficult part of democracy is working together.

This one isn't causing much contempt.

So far the only nations that have come out completely against what is happening are Iran and Venezuela (no suprises). Some other nations - notably Russia - have been disapproving of what they see as overstepping the resolution allowing the intervention, but they will also be happy to see Gadaffi gone. In much of the Middle-East there is support for the revolution in Libya and in much of Libya there is support for the NATO intervention.

As for what happens to Libya, it's a tough question. The hope is that the TNC is strong enough to unite Libya until elections happen which will almost certainly be based around tribes and Islam. There is a possibility of Libya splitting into Cyrenacia and Tripolitania. Worst case scenario is probably tribal warfare.

FWIW, the commoner in Libya is very happy about NATO's intervention. From the news reports I've seen, now that Tripoli has been taken, there were massive NATO and pro-USA rallies in the center with people waving flags of the various NATO member states.

I hope for the best, but I am worried what will happen. If this will become another Egypt.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

The last two comments echo precisely what worries me about foreign media.

It's unbelievable how oblivious it makes the world when it comes to Middle Eastern affairs.
