Oracle, Apple and Microsoft are finding elements in the android OS which they believe belong to their pattents, and since Google is giving Android for free and making no money on it, they are unable to sue Google directly. They are however able to sue the manufacturers using Android as they are charging money for a product... By aquiring motorolla, Apple lawsuits should be covered as they tend to sue for functionality and hardware...but I am really uncertain how aquiring motorolla helps with Microsoft and Oracle lawsuits. Microsoft is suing Motorolla as we speak for using Android, despite their boatload of patents as none of them are for the smartphone OS. |
1) Linux can't sue as it doesn't exist. Its not a company but a purely open source OS that can be distributed by anyone on anything.
2) Oracle's suite is frivilous as Java is a language that is intended be used by anyone for free as well. Only real issue is Android created their own SDK instead of calling it a new set of Java classes similar to what Apache and others do.
3) Apple's suits are all about form factor and Google buying these patents and then offering them in the standard licensing it gives to its partners wills squash all of their lawsuits. Additionally, Google and ask Apple to stop suing them all otherwise they will start litigations on Apple as I'm sure there will be plenty to start with.
4) MS has been focusing on specific items withing the OS... same things it has with agreements with Linux group partnes directly. So, in the end it actually has a legal point of view. Only thing now is Google may be able to retaliate with hardware design and potentially get MS to back off or simply make another lower costing agreement.
5) Above all this allows the removal of the craptastic motoblur UI and a focus on Android's pure OS. I can't wait for a plethora of Nexus style phones on Verizon. Once they hit and become very popular... HTC, Samsung, and LG might wake up and quit messing with the base of the OS and instead focus on unique app offerings.
