Forums - Gaming - Your thoughts? Locked RAGE SP content if purchased used...

I have no issues at all with this. The only way it would be unfair is if a guy doesn't have online (high speed internet or whatever) and he buys the game and can't get online to redeem the pass and play it.

Other than that issue I think its fine. People need to stop buying used anyways and support developers. The only game I want to buy used is MW3 because I want to play it but not support Activision.

well before anybody post i buy games new anyway: thats not the issue here.

its a stupid idea. i had plans to preorder rage but at this rate its not a buy for another 2 yrs for me. Battlefeild3s needing origin for PC is another stupid move. where do these fools (i know its about money and sales) come up with this stuff.

if i were retailers i wouldn't even put the game on shelves cause its a ripoff to the consumer.

if enough consumers complain about this Wal-Mart(who doesn't sale use games)will put pressure on this to change or risk having there game pulled of store shelves. they did it to the music industry.

They publishers/developers just forgot that it's the retailers that are helping them sell their games. Piss them off and they'll just selling your game, lol.

yep thats all it would take.

ain't that easy lol.

Be the first retailer to screw rage and Bethesda can do nasty stuff to do you when they release Skyrim ;)

Besides with digital around the corner they don't really want to screw with selling games. Look what happened to PC games.

Retailers hardly sell any these days and the market hasn't crashed, the sales just moved online where in the end the publisher is a lot happier ( no used games sales, lower distribution costs, Steam takes a smaller margin than most brick and mortar stores..)

lol i was going to mention that but left it to someone very observant to figure out. after that action it would be up to the consumer to say fuck you and your restrictions, but with download there'd be no need for those restrictions but who would be happy without resrtiction? only the consumer right lol!

I think it is a fair criticism, and though many developers may follow similar practices with their own games. That does not mean that practice isn't despicable. The truth is that consumers do own their games. Even if they do not own the rights to their games. That is why we can sell our old games, modify our old games, or destroy our games if we choose to do so. The developer has no right to our property. They can deny us external access if they like, but we should have what is in our hands.

I think if placed in any other context most consumers would have the same reservations. Would you buy a used car if say buying used caused the radio to stop working. How about a used home. How would you feel if buying it used caused the front lawn to die. I know it all sounds like hyperbole, but that is the thing about inching over the line it isn't long before you find you gave them an inch, and they took a mile.

So I applaud the original poster for his convictions. I say if it is on the disc, and you paid for that disc it should be yours whether you bought it retail or used. There are a lot of games I refuse to buy for these same reasons, and their are developers I refuse to buy from, because they horde extra pay content on their games. Lets call this out for what it really is. Developers squatting on other peoples property.

So I support those who will not buy this game on the grounds of principle. Hell I support those people that will take the time to jailbreak this content. Whatever is on that disc is fair game as far as I am concerned. All these sad end around attacks on the secondary market are entirely juvenile. People who buy your game used were highly unlikely to buy it new in the first place, and if you want to stymy that market your best bet is a high quality game with a lot of replay potential. Those are the games that are hard to find used, because most people will not sell their copy.

All things like this do is detract from a games reputation and by proxy the developers reputation as well. Will this detour me from buying the game. Well it is going to dampen my enthusiasm, but I personally have more then one principle to defend. I don't want to reward practices like this, but I also want to reward high quality games. If I do not buy good games then they will not be made.

I was almost on board for picking this title up over Dead Island. However this has put me back in the undecided column. Worse yet starting to get excited about this game made me feel like I needed another first person fix to go along with Skyrim which I do intend to pick up. So it has me reconsidering Battlefield 3.

It wasn't on my radar but I think now it's a definitly buy ( new of course, my money goes to developers not Gamestop or Best Buy).

Do you applaud me ?

Well I won't be buying it until I can get it very cheap then!

For the company that makes the game is better for them that, because by buying a new copy of the game for 20 bucks (or even 1 dollar) you are giving money to the developer, instead of giving it to GAMESTOP by buying a used copy for 30.

You seriously think it's a good thing to buy the game NEW at $20 or even at $1?

Let's say the game retail for $60. After factored in all the expenses to get that game to retail for you to buy, let's assume the break even price of the game is $25... Someone has to foot that loses and whoever that is, isn't going to be happy with you buying it for $20 or less.

You're wrong.

Most of those costs are percentage not fixed cost so everyone is still making money.

A game isn't a finished product made in China that has a high fixed cost to produce.

At most you're talking like 2-3$ of fixed cost in a game you purchase at a retailer, the rest is all individuals entities taking a percentage along the way ( developers get a percentage, publisher if different, gets a cut, distribution companies gets a cut ( the one between the publisher and the retailers), retailers gets a cut and so on...

Why do you think most companies are actually happy when their games sell over a million and make it to the greatest hits ?

Sure everyone makes more money if the game is sold 60$ than 20$ but once a game has reached its potential sales at a given price, it's better to lower the price and still make some money than not do it and kill all sales...

By the way you guys need to get on the train.
Most likely next gen the huge majority of sales will be digital and the majority of these issues will have disappeared.
And globally the price of games will be cheaper by the way. One of the big issue with brick and mortar is that a publishers can not drop the price of games as soon or when they want as brick and mortar shops gets mad when they overstocked a game and the publisher drops the price and still have all those copies they bought at a higher price...( Borderlands is 19.99$ as a greatest hit, I got Borderlands + all 4 dlcs for 14.99 on PSN).

The funny thing is that digital will benefit the most publishers and yet retailers are the one pushing for it with their ever expanding used games sales program that keep angering developers and publishers ( and customers.. I've noticed that the bigger the used games sales program in a shop, the poorer their new games inventory is).

Carmack is really burning up all that good will he got for basically inventing the FPS.

I suppose making new content as an incentive for buying a game new would be too much to hope for?

With content on the disk being locked out and DLC that offers too little for too much (including content on already on the disk), I suppose so.
