Most likely next gen the huge majority of sales will be digital and the majority of these issues will have disappeared.
And globally the price of games will be cheaper by the way. One of the big issue with brick and mortar is that a publishers can not drop the price of games as soon or when they want as brick and mortar shops gets mad when they overstocked a game and the publisher drops the price and still have all those copies they bought at a higher price...( Borderlands is 19.99$ as a greatest hit, I got Borderlands + all 4 dlcs for 14.99 on PSN).
The funny thing is that digital will benefit the most publishers and yet retailers are the one pushing for it with their ever expanding used games sales program that keep angering developers and publishers ( and customers.. I've noticed that the bigger the used games sales program in a shop, the poorer their new games inventory is).
