Some people have gotten closer to the mark. All Nintendo really needs is more capacity to do everything they want to do and need to do. If we can't get them to stop making GameCube-style games, the least they could do is build more in-house teams so that they could make more of everything. A major external acquisition wouldn't help, unless they picked up a company that really gelled with the Nintendo style; they need to get out there and build more teams and start poaching talent, so that they can just make more games across the board

Wow, I think you are miles off there...

My wife is a very casual gamer, she had a DS that she bought and occasionaly played... now she has an iphone.  Shes happy with the iphone and using my ipad2, she would never biuy a dedicated handheld ever again.  There will be millions just like this.

Also, I agree with what you yourself say "3-4 years from now almost everyone will have a tablet by their side".  That, along with smartphones, will be enough for the vast majority of people when it comes to handheld gaming.

YOUR iPad 2. Does she like playing the games enough to fork out £500 to buy one for herself at this stage? - 1.

In the short term, how many people spending £140 on a 3DS are going to consider a £400-500 iPad as an alternative?

Also, I think the consideration of a tablet as a handheld gaming machine is misguided. Of course the iPad is portable but I think it is more in competition with a PS4 than a PSV. I think most people using a tablet at the moment do so at home, not so much on the move. When the direct linkup to TV comes in the next year or two, tablets will be seen as a controller for the TV or a way of having your own version of what is showing on the TV - pretty much exactly what Nintendo are targetting with WiiU.

I think the issue here is considering tablets as being in competition with portable gaming machines rather than all gaming machines.

1. She is getting one for christmas....

2. Decent Android tablets will be easily attainable for £250 within a few months.

You seem to be trying to make a case that Sony and MS have more to fear from the advent of tablets and smartphones,   I think you are completely incorrect and we shall very soon I guess.  I think the 3DS price cut wont do anywhere near as much as some think and in the longer run, the 3DS wont get anywhere near DS penetration.  Meanwhile tablets and phones march on and on.

Why compare the sales of the 3DS to tablets and phones. That's an unfair comparison. There's only one 3DS and many versions of tablets and phones,so of course those 2 are going to do better in sales, plus there used for other things.

Exactly.

Another thing is, actually promoting the games made by these teams. Sure, they bought Monolith in 2007, but how many Monolith games have made it to America?

Nintendo is on a giant slope downwards, and a major part of it is due to their 'xenophobia' of outside help; they want to do everything alone.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

i voted wait and see. But how crazy would it be if Iwata got overthrown and we start to see Ninty games on app stores in a year??? That would be insanity

Nintendo should make better use of its more than $10 billion cash pile

I actually believe nintendo knows what their business is...

ok.  thats fine.

Investors dont agree with you and their recent performance says otherwise.  The recent massive price cut also disagrees with you, so in a sense Nintendo disagrees with you too.

Actually, they know their business very well, thats why they dont use the app route... I mean angry birds "sold" more than 100 million... and yet they havent made $100 million... but then you see smash bros, new super mario, DK, mario galaxy, mario kart... mario kart has sold more 25 millions (without bundles) make the math (25000000*$49= $1225000000) I mean business wise there is no contest. The iphones/app and all that stuff could work for publishing, but thats not the future of gaming.

This. What's hitting Ninty hard right now is just messing with or neglecting the targets it actually wants to cater for. Diversifying could be a good move, but is it in a market like cellphones with fierce competition, where even MS with all its billions is struggling against the market leaders?

No, i'm saying they *can* do it alone, they just need to make themselves bigger. EAD Tokyo was a good start, and they're supposed to have a new R&D center coming up in Kyoto in the next two or three years. That's what they need to pursue aggressively: making it so that they can go it alone, simply by making their internal groups bigger

Outsourcing old titles generally hasn't worked in the past, except to Next Level Games, whom they should totally lock down, but StarFox hasn't fared too well being passed around like a joint...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I also would hate that scenario; but maybe it would be for the better, because we would spend more time readying some books and doing more exercise.   You know, doing useful things :D.    I know that having "recreation" is also useful to avoid insanity (Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?? lol XD); but you must admit that "recreation" can be achieved by doing other things and not only by playing.    The sad thing about this, is that even knowing that, I cant stop playing lol (in a responsable way obviously; because if not I wouldnt have a job to buy my games XD).

I HATE APPLE!!!!

I really hope for SONY, M$ and NINTENDO to merge their gaming divisions together, if somehow apple takes over the gaming world. A consoles that has all those games, would kick apple in the butt really hard. Sadly just like in politics, they want all the cake for themselves and for doing so, they wont get a thing in the end :(

"PlayBox Revolution" :D
