Forums - Gaming - Policeman Blames London Riots on GTA

Well the officer seemed to have been refering too how children grow up these days. Saying when he was a kid they were raised on Pac-Man and Board games compared to how children these days are raised on GTA. Also his statement was probably taken out of context notice they don't name the officer so theirs no way of confirming that he said this or in such a context.

The media likes to promote contriversy they know by blaming a video game that they will get huge publicity and attract more viewers. Here where I live the media is always blaming movies and video games for almost everything. Fact is this kind of news gets alot of views and more attention then if they simply said the kids were insaine.

lol once again gaming is the scapegoat for bad parenting and delinquency... the thing that really confuses me about this is how other media like movies and music hardly ever get the same kind of blame

Simple. These other media are not dominated by first and foremost violent products. If it weren't for FIFA and PES, it would look even worse.

most of the movies that do well are action oriented ones with shooting, violence etc ( the dark night was the highest grossing movie ever i believe )

furthermore wii sports is the highest selling game this gen by a wide margin

Avatar is the highest grossing movie ever. Titanic comes after it. While lots of successful movies have violence, very few of them have gore, like most blockbuster video games.

Yet for all those soft movies you speak of, there is always a timely phenomenon like the SAW movies to counter your point.

The Saw movies aren't that successful. The entire franchise combined grossed less than the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Of course, the SAW movies were never released on DVDs, Blu-Rays or the Internet.

So were other movies, that ended up being more successful. Here's the list of the top selling DVDs of 2011 (so far):

The same site has a list of the top selling DVDs last year. No Saw movie was even in the top 100. If you browse the list, you'll see that the top movies aren't very violent, and certainly not gorry.

Your sig seems incredibly apt in this thread, because that seems to be exactly what's happening. Aside from it being 13 year old chavs causing trouble rather than men.

games like gta, CoD etc are not gory but yes are violent but that violence usually is in the form of fist fights, shooting etc and never really reaches a level above some of the movies mentioned

some of the top movies here like true grit, red, inception, unstoppable etc all have fist fights, shooting etc just like battlefield, CoD, gta etc... i wouldn't really say that the violence in these games extends that far over what is seen in these movies

This list explains why the thread starter didn't bother to link to readily available data. It completely defeats his point and my assumption was correct.

Most studios make sure their films avoid the R rating, because it increases the number of people that would go and see the movie.

GTA is extremely violent, due to the fact that you can essentially go and kill regular bystanders on the street. If it were a movie, it would be rated at least R, which would significantly hurt it's box office gross (no R rated movie is even in the top 20 highest grossing films list). Same would go for CoD, if it were a movie. True Grit was like Unforgiven for kids, and none of the movies you mentioned can even compare in terms of violence (and sex and drug-related content) to GTA. If parents actually payed attention to video game ratings like they do with movie ratings, GTA would only sell a small fraction of what it currently sells.
